I have had this lens for some time, and I just notice a strange behavior today. If I have IS on, focus and recompose the image, most of the time, the image come out as blurry. If I turn IS off, focus and recompose, I get a much sharper image. However if I do not focus and recompose, the image will look fine with IS on or off. I tested my other tamron lens (70-200 f2.8 vc), and it is working perfectly fine with IS on or off. I wonder if it is a problem with my lens? Does anyone else notice the same with this lens?

I have not noticed the same behavior, but I may not be shooting under the same circumstances.

I just got the lens 4 days ago and was so happy with the sharpness and the beautiful colors it renders. This gave me to courage to use it at a wedding two days ago for the formals, 40% of the images were soft or blurry. I did some further testing and started noticing that if the VC is on 90% of the images are soft or blurry. I am sending this lens back to B & H. I have read on other forums that some people have to go through 2 or 3 copies to find a good one. I sending this one back and buy the canon version without IS and twice the price.

You wouldn't happen to be in Al Servo mode, would you?

I'd be more suspicious that it was AI Focus rather than Servo.

Sorry didn't mean to hijack your thread. I got a new copy and it's exibiting most of the problems of the last copy. It is super sharp and in focus without the VC. but struggles to lock focus when the VC is engaged. I am not sure if I am going to be keeping it just yet. I am trying to love the lens but don't know if there is a design flaw with the VC or not. My Tamron 90 2.8 VC work like a charm every time.

I had a 70-200 f2.8 mk2From Tamron that did this from new. I sent it back the next day that was the second one I had from Tamron, the first one I had the aperture blades would stick closed from time to time, the only way to sort it was to turn the camera off then back on, and the lens would work fine shame relay the first lens was the sharper one of the 2 i got.

I find that, with other lenses (never used a Tamron), my keeper rate went up quite a bit once I stopped using the focus & recompose technique, but rather tried to compose first at the beginning, focusing using the outer focus points. Focusing and recomposing can result in soft images esp. if you're working in conditions that would result in a thin/shallow DOF.

That being said, it's definitely possible that there is an issue with the VC with the Tamron 24-70 specifically, but I've never any of this discussed in reviews since the lens came out.

I have personally interacted with a couple of people who've had, and returned, defective Tamrons; one person who owned multiple copies had to send his latest one back because AF failed just outside the return period. :(

Wow old thread. I wish I had seen this thread years ago.

I bought my Tamron 24-70 G1 new years ago and noticed that it would randomly have soft focus about every 8 images.
At the time i had my Canon 70D and I assumed that it might just be the lens/body combo.

I have had my Canon R6 for a couple of years now and still had the same issue. It didn't occur to me to turn the IS off until a couple of months ago and sure enough, that solved my issues.

I was still weary about it, but after doing a few photo shoots with it, I am now confident in using it with the IS off and have zero issues since.

I am just posting to say that yes, people are still having issues wit that lens :)
