I currently have a gen ii 2x canon extender. That being said, I just ordered a brand new 70-200L 2.8, will my extender work with this lens, or is the version iii needed?
Thank you,
-james

The only difference between using the mark III extenders, instead of the mark II generation, is that Canon have made some optimizations regarding the cooperation between the extenders and more recent lenses as far as AF goes. The mark III extenders are also improved from an optical point of view and (perhaps even more important?) mechanically. There are more screws holding the flanges of the bayonet mount in the mark III versions, for example. With more frequent use of heavy lenses, I can imagine that being a good improvement.

The mark III extenders are also fully compatible with the most recent AF micro adjust algorithms, which you find in cameras like the 1DX and the 5D Mark III. Another difference is that mark III extenders can't be stacked. You simply can't mount both the EF extender 1.4X III and the EF extender 2X III behind the EF 70-200 mm f/2.8L IS II USM at the same time. They will not fit. Older versions can be stacked.

Roman numerals are always capitalized, by the way.
