How does the 50D compare to the Rebels? I was looking at a used 50D and was wondering if it's as good as the latest Rebels or if I'd be better off with a T3i or T5i.

I had a 50D, sold it, bought two 7D's.
A new Rebel may well outperform a camera that "old"

When the 7D Mark 2 is released, the used market should be flooded with 7D's; & the 7D is "head & shoulders" above a 50D in performance.

The T2i and successors should beat the 50D at high ISOs, if that is what you are asking.

Heya,

Depends what you need and what you want to shoot.

The 50D is a good camera, but for it's cost, you can get a T3i or so probably which is simply better in various categories.

Very best,

The 50D has a much easier control system thsn the rebels. The dual control wheels mske it much simpler and intuitive to make adjustments while shooting.

I love my 50D for the sound the shutter makes!
A few years ago I replaced it with a 600D (of all cameras) because of the "new features".
Since then I treat the 50D in a brutal manner. Last time it was raining terrible and decided to use (only) the 50D which became soaking wet but held it together and provided the pictures I wanted.
Not something I would do with my 5D-family :o
The 50D I wouldn't buy today but since its in my collection I'm proud to use it, on a rainy day!
Good luck, Alain

the 50D has better controls, Micro focus adjustments, bigger body and grip, uses CF cards, bigger buffer, better weather sealing, shoots over 6 fps, and 1/8000th shutter speed. Sensor wise, it probably matches the one in the T1i. The T2i and later use a slightly better sensor.

a newer sensor and video is nice, the older XXD models are larger and have better controls

I have had a 50D for 18 months and am really happy with it. No it isn't the newest or have the most MP but it's intuitive and was a nice move up from a 20D and in total it cost me £100 (selling old body and a lens that it came with).

Personally I have found the XXD cameras feel nicer to handle and it might not have video or touch screens, but I struggle to take good photos as it is. Plus it can use Magic Lantern which is interesting to play around with for the extra functionality.

Thanks for all the replies. I used to have an XTi and then a T3i before selling it and getting a Fuji X10. I'll be keeping the Fuji for when I want something light but will be picking up another SLR for when I want better image quality. I think I'll pass on the 50D and continue my search.

If you want better image quality look at the 5d classic. True it's not the latest but it's still a marvelous camera and if you go look at the 5D classic examples thread you will see why people still rave about it.

I had a 50d. I've had a few different Canon Dslrs. In my opinion image quality from the 50d is not as good as most of the rest of the Canon range (including the 10d and 20d). I had a t2i at same time as 50d and much preferred the pictures it made. 50d is fast and tough and better designed but I think it has a poor sensor.

They upped the resolution from the 40D sensor from 10 to 15, but also improved the microlens design to go gapless, I believe. I think that was with the 50D. The end result was that if you resized the 50D images down to the 40D size, they were very comparable in IQ. The problem was that people would pixel peep, and when you add 50% more total resolution, with a sensor design that is largely unchanged from the previous model, that 100% view wasn't very nice.

I agree with much of your stuff teamspeed, I have learned from your posts. But here I disagree. I am not much of a pixel peeler, regularly print photos down to required size at 300 pixels per inch. At one time I had a 50d, a 10d and a 550d or t2i as its called stateside. Images were better from the 10d and 550d for me accept at higher iso where the 10d caved sooner than the 50d.

I haven't really much interest in microless or gapless sensors or having to resize to get the same quality as a less specced older model. I stand by my assessment, that for me at least the 50d was a good camera with a poor sensor and image quality.

The 550D had the newer better sensor, and it would look better than the 50D. My comment was around the 40D to 50D transition, and all the gripes that were posted initially about the 50D. The 7D/T2i heralded in a new APS-C era with a newly designed sensor. The 70D heralded in a new sensor design too, but didn't quite have the jump in IQ as the 7D over the 50D did, IMO.

I don't think you disagree with me, I think your perspective is different, as you mention the T2i, etc. Take any prior Rebel (T1i and before) and compare to the 50D, they were very nearly equal.
