As usual (of late), they're late to the party.

A Canon-made sensor at M43 size would be less than impressive.

As it stands, most M43 2x crop sensors already deliver image quality as good as Canon's APS-C sensors.

most M43 cameras have image quality higher then APS-C canons, but more glass for M43 format would be nice :)

I don't see where in that link it says Canon will join m43. It talks about Canon making a new system and speculates that it will be around the m43 size. What did I miss?

I don't get why people rag on companies for this. Especially Apple. Usually the first entry into a market has a lot of kinks to work out. Why would they rush in to a market they are unsure of? Basically other companies do the R&D and first "beta" for them. They get to see what works and what doesn't and bake this in to their first offering. Does it cost them some sales? Sure. But when they come on 2 years later with a superior product, people buy it.

To go off on a tangent - how many phones and "tap to pay" things have been out there for years (if not decades?) Not once has my bank (Wells Fargo) ever mentioned these as an option. maybe if I searched I could find it and ask for it. However, the iPhone 6 wasn't even out yet and I have emails from Wells Fargo and 2 other companies I have accounts with telling me how to sign up and use Apple Pay or whatever it is called.

Not every product a company makes has to be the first to market. There is value in patience.

It's a nice theory, but in practice it hasn't worked out. Canon sat on the sidelines for years while other companies developed mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras. So, according to the theory their first entry into the world of mirrorless should have had all the kinks worked out, right? Not the case! The EOS M was an embarrassingly feeble entry into mirrorless - way-underperforming as compared to other manufacturers' products.

On the other hand I am ambivalent about Canon doing M4/3. I would rather them skip it and just work out those kinks with the EOS M that they should have already worked out since all those other companies were supposedly doing R&D for them. ;)

I never said they couldn't screw it up - but they have the information available.

I think this will be very good for m43 if it happens and allows Canon to enter the mirrorless world without too much risk or chance of messing up. A strong, proven lens line up already exists in m43 so a Canon m43 camera could have higher adoption from the start as people are not put off by lack of lenses.

This seems to make no sense to me. They already have the EOS-M, and pair this with a "pancake" lens, you got a pretty compact package indeed. If Canon would improve upon the EOS-M such as better AF, viewfinder, I could be interested.

Yet another 4/3rds, too little (sensor), too late ...

A Yogi Berra quote comes to mind.

I think Canon is going FF mirrorless. They're going to fight the A7. ;)

There is a a lot of speculation around this new lens mount Canon is developing. Most are expecting it to be a FF mirrorless. Canon is also supposedly bringing a high resolution FF sensor in the near future. My guess is that they're putting together a camera to take on the Sony a7r.
