This is silly. Just call it a 7D. Because, that's its name.

Will not be changing my sig.

The 7D was a "classic" for half of its production life as far as I'm concerned.

I can fully understand referring to a camera as a 5Dc or 7Dc in a thread, but in a signature it seems pointless to me. Obviously if you're using the mk2 you're going to label it as such in your signature, so why add the c? It's fairly obvious that if your signature says "7D", you're shooting the mk1.

To me a 7D is always a 7D. And a 5D is never a 5D2 or 5D3.

These rename trends are similar to people who noticed the writing of the y2k bug and then started to talk about 2k1 to mean 2001 when engineering has been using the notation 2k1 to mean 2.1*1000 = 2100 for a great many years. People just want to rename things just because.

It's extra interesting when people adds a c for classic. So 5Dc. But Canon has a 1Dc which is not the predecessor to 1D Mk II. Renaming things is a great way to add confusion.

Clearly we all have too much time on our hands. :-)

IMO 7D is the 7D and the 7D mkII is just that.

Precisely. Here's one person who have it all understood. But then he's not American either. It's not just in these photo forums it's some kind of American disease to rename everything "classic" when it's been around for a couple of weeks.

It's a cultural thing.

If everyone would use the specific model in their discussions, there would be no need to rename anything. Unfortunately many don't use specifics when they ask questions about one model versus another. And that isn't an American trait, that is global, even from your fine country of Sweden. I resent the generalities you have put out, that was completely uncalled for.

It becomes easier to give the original 5D and 7D a designation that separates it from its siblings. In all reality, if there is a Mark II, then the original is a Mark I, thus 5DI and 7DI works just fine and should eliminate your stereotype about American diseases in calling things classics.

Also before you decide to take jabs at American culture, you might want to check into things just a bit more. ;)

And the first coined term of 5Dc on the POTN EOS Cameras board came from where in 2007?

The 2nd use of it in the next year was from where? Again, not America, but Australia. Hopefully you were trying to be humorous, but it certainly didn't come off as very funny. If you want to accuse of us anything, accuse us of mimicry. :)

bw!

OK, having now lived almost 1/2 my life in the US and reading this and some other posts I now feel better in declaring my 7D a 'classic'. Most people around here (note: not on east or west coast where they have some actual 'old' things) think their house is old after 10 years and they have to buy a new one, and a piece of electronics is useless after 4 months.

In reality I guess I bought my 7D when it was already a 'classic'.

Changed my sig again to reflect my tongue-in-cheek nature of the 'c' designation.

I like my "regular old" 7D... Something I've noticed though, is I still get great shots out my frumpy old T2i. Guess I'm not a "real" photographer...

Are you sure yours isn't a copy, and Canon kept the original for themselves?

Steve, you are clearly a bad photographer since a T2i it only has an 18 MP sensor (WHAT?) and only shoots 3.7 frames per second (REALLY?). There is no way it could keep up with my 6D that has a 20.2 MP and 4.5 frames per second. Wait a minute, why did my 6D cost so much? As everyone knows it is not the camera that takes the picture, it just makes the picture. The image is created by that organic computer 6 inches behind the camera.

My 5D is a classic - it fits the Wikipedia description

===============
A classic is an outstanding example of a particular style, something of lasting worth or with a timeless quality. The word can be an adjective (a classic car) or a noun (a classic of English literature). It denotes a particular quality in art, architecture, literature, design, technology, or other cultural artifacts. In commerce, products are named 'classic' to denote a long standing popular version or model, to distinguish it from a newer variety. Classic is used to describe many major, long-standing sporting events. Colloquially, an everyday occurrence (e.g. a joke or mishap) may be described as 'an absolute classic'.

"Classic" should not be confused with classical, which refers specifically to certain cultural styles, especially in music and architecture: styles generally taking inspiration from the Classical tradition, hence classicism.
