Question about viewing photos on my computer

Running Win 7 Pro, SP1.

I have set Irfanview on my computer as the default viewer for JPEG photos. The JPEG's display with an Irfanview icon (in List or Details mode), and open in Irfanview when I double-click the icon.

However, when I connect my Canon SX260 HS to my computer via the USB cable, navigate to the camera folder with my photos, and double-click on a photo, it opens in Windows Photo Viewer (although the icons of the photos in the camera still show as Irfanview icons in when viewed in List or Details mode). Why is this happening, and how can I stop it? It's interesting to note that if I right-click the photo and choose Open from the menu, the photo will open in Irfanview.

If I understand correctly here, to get the photo to open in the desired program you can right click on the pic, go to properties in the dropdown, and in the popup under the general tab is "Opens program with" and if your program of choice is not available click on "Change" button and select from the generic list in the popup or you can add whatever program there as well and make it your default.

Thanks for the replies.

gug, there is no such option when I choose properties from a photo in my camera.

Dennis, as I said in my original post, Irfanview is already set as my default viewer, and works in all cases EXCEPT with photos in the camera.

If you want to stick with your program, try inserting the SD Card into a computer slot or get a USB SD Card reader and try that.

gug, of course I could do that, but I find it more convenient (and quicker) to connect via USB cable.

I'm not looking for work-arounds for this issue, I'm trying to understand why this is happening, so that I can "fix" it.

Did you go through the "Control Panel/Default Programs /Set your default" programs to associate Irfanview with your photos? If so, you should also try the "Associate a file type...with a program" for your Jpeg and Raw files to set Irfanview as the program.

gug, thanks for the link. Lots to look for there, and I'm still looking.

denncald, yes, I did associate Irfanview with JPGs via the control panel.
However, I don't want to make Irfanview the default for ALL the programs it can open, because I use other default programs for different types of files, even though it's possible for Irfanview to open them.
