I wanted to show this Costas at his favorite perch but because it's always in shade, I thought I'd play around using a flash. Even though the exif says no flash, I used my Canon 430 EXII in manual mode at 1/8th power and mounted on the Sony flash shoe.

Manual exposure and focus at 70mm for this shot.

Here's a little better shot of him on 'his' perch. I used a 55mm lens and no flash for this shot.

I've been wondering where my little Costas hummingbird has been hiding during the hottest part of the day. I figured in one of the nearby bushes. Today, I found out his hiding spot...almost where I sit while I watch him when he's near the feeder. I'm sure he's watching the feeder from here too...waiting to shoo away any trespassers. :D

Thanks. Only the middle image is a decent shot but I thought the three together told an interesting story. I thought it was cute to see the Costas 'sitting' at the patio table and watching the feeder like I do.

Up until now I didn't realize how tiny they are. Hats off to all of the hummers' shooters the work I never commented on :) Great shots.

Thanks. With all the great close up shots of hummingbirds here, it is hard to appreciate just how tiny they really are sometimes.

Thanks. I thought it was a little unusual to see him hiding under the table.

That's a fun set Gene, especially the hiding spot!

Thanks. Here is a test shot I took when I first bought my Sony a7r to test the dynamic range. It gives a good idea of where the table is in relation to the flower pot. The feeder is just out of frame on the left and the sliding glass door I shot out of is just out of frame on the right. The width of the patio is 9 ft.

Interesting scenario, Gene. Bit surprised they ventured into this area, enclosed as it is. But I believe they're pretty confident in their "escape capabilities".
