hi all,i recently got a yonguno manual flash to try some new photos,i knew it was full manual and i hoped i would learn how to use it properly,i have managed to get some decent shots with it,a friend of a friend was selling a polaroid pl190c gn54 wireless ttl flash,i only got it as it was pretty cheap,i figured the ttl would prob help me out,my question is if i get a yonguno rf603 11c1 transmitter, will it work with both flashes?i am looking at the transmitter on amazon and it comes with transmitter and receiver,i assume i don't need the receiver,as both flashes are wireless compatable, why don't cameras have wireless transmitters built in,if they have wifi it seems simple enough,i am hoping this transmitter will work with both flashes, thanx for any tips and info,

If your YongNuo flash already have built-in receiver, yes, you dont need a pair of RF603 II. But to trigger the Polaroid flash off camera you need that receiver.
So buy the RF603II, set one as transmitter and other one as receiver for the Polaroid.

By the way RF 603II is not a TTL trigger as far as I know, so the TTL feature on the Polaroid wont work.

There's a whole mish mash of technologies that are confusing because they just use 'wireless' to describe what they do.

Wireless flash triggering comes in many forms, and several instances of the same technology that use incompatible protocols:

  • Firing a remote flash using an optical sensor, so it just reacts to another flash going off.
  • The Canon near IR system which communicates power settings using light pulses
  • Dumb wireless radio triggers that just send 'fire' commands
  • Smart wireless radio triggers that send the same info as the Canon system.

Your Yongnuo may accept a straight 'fire' signal from the rf603 trigger, but the other flash won't, if you add a receiver to the Polaroid flash it'll work only as a dumb manual flash.

You can use the Polaroid flash as a remote ETTL unit if your camera is capable of communicating with it's pop up flash. The YN will then be set as an optical slave on S2.

You could buy ETTL radio triggers, they'll control the Polaroid more efficiently, and again, the Yongnuo will either be optically triggered, or you can put a wireless receiver on it.

From a photographic point of view, ETTL is great when you're in a constantly changing environment, but in a static set up, manual control is more efficient.

Does the Polaroid flash have the ability to be used manually? Does it have manual power adjustments? Some inexpensive ETTL flashes do not, meaning that using it with a manual trigger would result in a full power flash.

Then one method would be to use it in the hotshoe and the YN as a remote flash, removing the need for a trigger.

thanx for the tip,ill try that since i already have both flashes now,on a different note i have a flash question,i notice when i pop up the camera flash the shutter speed will change accordingly, the speed is different if i don't pop up the flash, this is in av mode, when i have the ttl polaroid flash mounted i notice the shutter speed doesn't seem to change if the flash is powered up or not, will a ttl flash change the shutter speed?i notice the flash sends a red beam when i confirm focus but the shutter speed remains the same, will the flash meter "evaluative or average"make a difference in this, thanx for the replies and tips

When you say the shutter speed changes, do you mean it drops below max sync speed?

no,i mean if i set my cam at a scene with cam flash down the cam will meter accordingly like say .5 sec at f5,6 with iso 400 and if i don't touch anything and put the pop up flash on it meters accordingly to the flash and the shutter speed changes to 1/30 or something faster,it compensates for the flash arrordingly,i notice the ttl flash doest do that,is it because it doesn't know where the flash is pointed,up or sideways maybe.thanx for the quick replies helping me understand the flash

I have to admit my ignorsnce of how the camera behaves ( I'm assuming in some auto mode) with the popup flash. I abhore them, they are so awful I don't use them on my cameras that hsve had them. But unless you are above max sync there should be no changing of shutter speeds with sn external flash.

There's a custom function to change the behaviour.

But by default your camera figures that if you're using flash, you don't really want the shutter speed to drop, so it'll raise the shutter speed and use the flash as your primary light source.

Without flash, it'll assume you know that the low shutter speed will need a tripod. Assuming that if you don't know that, you'd have used the green box where it'd have automatically given you a flash exposure.
