I ordered this lens on the 19th, and I’ve had a few people ask me where I ordered it from. Thought this was a weird question. When asked they gave me no answers as to why they asked.

Now it makes me wonder, is there some big no lens available problem I don’t know about?

Thanks for any info....

Which 70-200mm f/2.8 lens? There are two or three available from Canon, two from Sigma and two from Tamron.

Yes, the market is that complicated and crowded.

Then consider the currently popular third-party alternatives. The newest stabilized Tamron unit (external link) has its supporters, as does the stabilized Sigma lens (external link).

Also, there are those who think the previous Canon stabilized lens (external link) is good enough. And the older-generation non-stabilized Tamron lens (external link)was a good optical performer despite its sluggish autofocus response.

Of course, you'll need to decide if your time and money are worth the cost of the newer Canon unit or if you can exist without a lens.

Often people assume the most expensive unit is "best," without considering that "best" can also mean most suitable,

I’ve looked at all the 2.8 lenses, chose, and bought the one I wanted. I asked if it was on back order, because I had several people ask me where I bought it from, which was odd to me.

But as an update it shipped yesterday, and I got the tracking number.

All is well…

I'm sure they're asking where you bought it from because there are quite a few sellers that list camera gear as "in stock" and have good deals, but don't actually have the items. Sometimes you have to wait for them to get the item, then it's shipped to you, or sometimes they just take your money and you're out of luck.

I personally stick to the large online retailers when I order something of any value. I've read too many horror stories of money disappearing, long waits for items, restocking fees for returned things, etc.

In that thread I think only one person asked you where you bought it from. You may have misread wha the second person asked. They only asked which 70-200 you purchased.

On a sidenote if you bought it from one of the classic bait and switch or scam places vs a well established authorized dealer it could be the old "wait it out until you have to call them to get a refund" or they will tell you it's going to be awhile and try to upsell

Yep - if you buy from a bait and switch they typically contact you at some point in the transaction (call to confirm the order is a common one) and will then try to up sell. Basically they advertise a "too good to be true" price with the intent of then selling you overpriced addons. These might be cheap rubbishy things (cheap filters/tripod) or they could be normally included items in the box or just made up rubbish (eg upgrade your lens hood to a MIII which is better - or if you pay a little more we'll have your lens elements treated against woodrot).

If you pay for the extras the price will go up to as much if not more than regular stores and you might get your lens. If you don't pay for the extras your order will never process (some just keep it "awaiting stock" till you cancel whilst others just drop the order and refund you); that's because the price really is too good and they'd never be able to profit from such discounts.

Tools of the trade: Canon 400D, Canon 7D, Canon 70-200mm f2.8 IS L M2, Sigma 120-300mm f2.8 OS, Canon MPE 65mm f2.8 macro, Sigma 150mm f2.8 macro, Tamron 24-70mm f2.4, Sigma 70mm f2.8 macro, Sigma 8-16mm f4.5-5.6, Raynox DCR 250, loads of teleconverters and a flashy thingy too

No reason it should take 2 weeks.

2 weeks. I wish it would get here in two weeks. I wish any package would get here in two weeks. Most take a month or more..

brand new right from canon.
For clarification, I am currently sitting outside of Kandahar Afghanistan. It takes a long time for anything to be delivered. The fedex tracking number shows an estimated 28 oct for delivery…

....soooo where DID you order it from?

through a canon distributor.

And if that distributor was a place like B&H Photo in Manhattan there has been a religious holiday since 10/2 and orders are not being processed until 10/5.

vague answers usually end up resulting in the question being asked again...

Adorama, Amazon, & B&H ship the item the next day. If you are in the continental US, your item should arrive in less than 1 week with their standard, free shipping. WHERE did you buy it from? A "canon distributor" is hardly a specific answer...
