I havent owned a tv in years as I rarely watch anything but I am thinking of getting a large screen to watch movies and such. For that purpose a 1080p would be perfectly fine but then I thought if I viewed pictures on a 4k tv it should look quite good. Any thoughts if 4k is worth the price difference over a 1080p to view pics? In other words is there a noticeable difference?

I worked around 4K TVs, selling 4K TVs, for quite a while. You notice a difference up close but unless you sit very close or have a very large TV (65+ on up) it's not worthwhile imo.

that is interesting as prices for 1080p arent expensive at all compared to a 4k. and like dog said you could easily buy a new lens or some other camera gear instead

Oh yeah for sure, better decision right now. I bet 5 years from now they will be more popular and cheaper but right now with everything being NOT 4k content, it will all look soft. Not worthwhile to view photos alone.

Ive got a 65" XBR 4K TV that I picked up a few months ago.....looks incredible.

Sometimes theories don't match up exactly with actual perception....It looks better with HD than my old TV (48 inch Sharp LED) and when I feed it a 4K source, no words....

I have a 2560x1440 monitor. Does that count?

Since july I'm using a Samsung 40inch 4K tv for pc and loving it!
It was a stepup over the LG 37inch HD I used since 2006.

I think 4K displays work really well for showing photos only when you can easily get closer to it to see the minute details. This probably doesn't work too well with TVs, where viewers are typically sitting at a certain distance, one has to get up and move closer to the TV to see the details. But it works very well on smaller (portable devices). I love to use my Samsung ATIV 9+ ultrabook to show off my photography to clients - with it's 13.3" screen and almost 4K resolution (3200x1800; 276 dpi) photos look gorgeous, and one only needs to move the laptop (or your head) a bit closer to appreciate fine details - same as with a printed photograph.
