I was going to buy a used 5D I. But then an idea popped in my head: are the batteries still manufactured for this older camera, or are all the batteries for sale old and have been sitting on the shelf for a few years?

Does anyone who owns this know? The battery is the BP-511A and there are many for sale from China.

Up until a few months ago I had a 5D and exclusively used the cheap batteries off E Bay. The reason was simple - all my Canon batteries failed!
I found the E Bay cheapies to be full compatible, longer lived and higher capacity (though not as high as they claim) than the Canon originals. My third party BP 511 packs were between 4 and 6 years old and all were working fine, all 3 of my Canon ones were dead within 3 years.

Life is for living, cameras are to capture it (one day I will learn how!).

There is nothing technologically special about the BP511A, unlike the newer chipped Canon batteries. Buy any aftermarket, just be sure to buy from a reputable place.

I bought two BP511A from Amazon about two years ago. I just picked the ones with the best reviews. They worked fine.

Good advice. You can order direct from the importer to insure fresh batteries. The prices are similar to Amazon. Something right around $15 to $20 should get you a new fresh battery.

Wasabi battery for the 5D at http://www.bluenook.com …k=salesrank&searchSize=12 (external link)

or

the SterlingTek Canon battery for the 5D at http://sterlingtek.trynt.com/canon-bp-511a-battery/ (external link)

Search around those sites a bit as both importers bundle the batteries with chargers if that might be of interest.

I recently bought two new BP-511A batteries from Sterlingtek. The 5D uses the same batteries as my 50D, I believe...
