So I have a Lexar Professional 800X 16gb card that my camera says need to be formatted. How am I supposed to do this. In camera going through the format process it says, Format Card, ALL data will be lost! but when I hit ok it says, "Cannot Format Change Card".

So what am I to do...?

Have you tried formatting the card on a PC/Mac? Or perhaps the card is locked?

In addition to answering these questions, I see by your profile that you have a 30d and a canon 1d mkIII. Which camera is givng you issues and what type card? As I recall the 1DMKIIIcan use SD or CF but the canon 30D is strictly CF.

Also, what is the PC/MAC operating system you have?

Revised...correction to camera and card compatibility

30D uses CF only:

• Compact Flash Type I or II
• Microdrive supported
• FAT 12/16 and FAT 32 support

Interesting issue. SD has a slide switch, but CF does not.

If you can connect it to a computer I would suggest deleting any partition. Place it in the camera and try allowing the camera to format it.

Interesting that the OP also has a current thread in which he feels a Lexar 3.0 card reader is giving him an issue. See https://photography-on-the.net …/showthread.php?t=1399578.

The Canon 30D can not format the 16 GB card...The max CF card size for the 30 D is 8 GB.

I just dont understand why my camera would say "Cannot Format, Change Card1".

It cannot format a 16GB card and knows it, thus it says to change the card. There are many generations of controllers and cards, and is apparently aware of the mismatch as noted in post just previous to your last one.

"So what am I to do...?" - tennfan1125

Buy an 8 GB or 4 GB card and try that in the camera.

FYI, you have this reversed. The 1DMKIII had both SD and CF, while the 30D only has CF.

Good catch and I fixed my original comment.

Ok, so the 30d cannot format the card... I got that but what about a 1d mark III? Can it not format the card either?

Sorry but that's incorrect

The 30D removed the 8GB limit of the 20D and can support card up to at least 32GB and I'm 99% sure up to the CF spec's maximum size of 137GB.

Is that perhaps just part of the issue; the other being what file system does the 30D support? Even a later camera, the 40D for instance only supports FAT32 which only supports a maximum partition of only 32GB.

Keep in mind as well that the OP has a separate thread elsewhere where he suspects issues with a Lexar USB 3.0 card reader so I can't help but think the two issues aren't related.

Would be helpful if the OP could tell us if the reader is failing with all cards or just this same card in particular.

If one card, then sounds like the card maybe at fault and needs replacing.

I must say I have never once had a card not format in camera using a 30D, 50D and 1D mkIV, but I do only use 16GB CF cards and a 32GB SD in the 1D
