Thinking of upgrading from my T3

So I think the time is near to upgrade from my T3 (not the T3i). I have my eye on the 70D. I shoot a lot of studio and portraits, also a good amount of landscape. I will also be shooting a friends wedding in August (will be renting a second body), and may start getting into weddings more.

So is the 70D my best bet? I would love to go for the 5d3 but thats just not happening on this upgrade.

Based on the things you mention, sounds like the 6D is a solid candidate as well.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

Heya,

The 70D provides good things for what you're looking to do (resolution, good ISO performance). But a lot of what you're looking to do would benefit even more from a larger sensor, and even better ISO performance, and better depth of field control. The 6D or 5D2 would provide that, in a similar price range.

Very best,

I could probably jump to the 6d if I go refurbished, however even refurbished the 5d2 is pushing the budget, and if I go FF I will need to grab another lens or two as everything I have is EF-s.

Is the perks of the 6d worth building an entire new kit? I know thats subjective. I just know my T3 sucks as I start going up in ISO.

Heya,

Depends.

When I think of studio, portrait and landscape, I don't see much ISO need there. So I don't see a reason to need ISO performance there. That means you can get away with just a decent sensor and focus on glass and lightning rather than the camera as much for those things (at least in my opinion).

Weddings are where I think of having great ISO performance, for those moments you can't use flash, but this also really relies on fast glass as well as high ISO, so it's not just an ISO argument. But if this is really important, I would stress getting high ISO performance.

That said, the 70D has very good ISO performance. It's got great resolution. It will do everything you're looking to do with a lot of overhead room to spare. If it's in your budget, it's a good camera to go with. Especially if you're not able to move away from EF-S glass. It would make sense to get this camera. You can get a refurb for $800 usually? Great option.

Very best,

Going with the 70d would allow a good amount of room to grab a good lens or two. If going to the 6d I would be hard pressed just picking up a single lens with it. I currently have some decent ef-s glass that would all become useless after going FF. Hmmm such a tough call.

Weddings are something I am thinking of getting into, which is what has me on the fence so much. Might need to go with the 70d and new glass now and before I dive into weddings budget in a FF so I own two bodies and some fast glass.

I would look into the 6D as well. Lighly used here go for around $1300. What is your current lens setup?

Yesterday they actually had it $100 off and it was $699 AR with the printer. Didn't last long though.

Currently I have:
Canon 15-85 EFS
Sigma 30 1.4 DC
Canon 18-55 EFS
Canon 55-250 EFS

When I was looking at the 70d I had plans to also grab some more glass as 2 of my 4 are paper weights.

^ I was in a very similar position last December. Partly by accident. :D

I had the the T4i camera, the 17-55, 10-22, and 50 f1.4 lenses.
I was not 'unhappy' with my gear, but I had never tried a FF camera.
I happened upon a used 6D and an amazing price and without hesitation bought it. ;)
To fund the purchase, I got a good offer on my T4i and sold it the next day.
My EF-S lenses were unusable, listed for sale, and sold quickly. (for a little less than I paid)

Long story short. I love my 6D and would happily do it all over again.
Don't let your current lenses keep your from making a potentially great purchase.
I am not happier with the ISO performance on my 6D as well as it's thinner DOF for my creative needs.

Good luck in your choice.

I have considered a full frame camera a few times but then I add up the lenses I would need to use to duplicate what I have now. Of course, I could still use my 70-300L and 400 f/5.6L but I wouldn't be able to fill the frame when taking wildlife photographs. Anything over 400mm is cost prohibitive for me, at this point.

If I didn't shoot wildlife, the transition would be a bit easier but I have to admit, I really like my 15-85 for landscapes and I'm starting to like the 17-55 f/2.8. I could be wrong but I'm under the impression I'd need a 24-70 II to replace them. The costs add up quickly.

I am finding the cost add up quickly as well, I can pick up a 70d plus a 10-18, 85 1.8, 100mm 2.8 macro and the Tamron 150-600 for just a bit over a FF and 1-2 pieces of glass.
