I guess I'll ask who has better RAW APS-C high ISO noise than this 7DmkII right now? I don't know of any camera that does.

You guys seem to have been under the impression that Canon would somehow magically make a 1.6x crop sensor act like a FF one.

I'd take the Fujis or the Nikon crop sensors over that any day. It doesn't seem to be any different than Canon was putting out 5-6 years ago.

Not impressed. Any improvement with shadow pulling? Probably not...

I have to agree with those that say the 7D MKII isn't enough of a upgrade to warrant purchasing

I am fairly certain that you don't need a 7D in order to purchase a 7DII. My grandchildren are getting older and more active on the sports fields. If/when I upgrade my apsc camera, it may well be a 7DII, which certainly is an upgrade from my current 60D.

Maybe the soccer-mom crowd with their T3is want an upgrade. Are you claiming the 7DII isn't appreciably better than a T3i? It surely outclasses it in AF, fps, and buffer depth. Nah, it doesn't have a flip-out screen. Not an upgrade.

WARNING: I often dispense advice in fields I know little about!

If it were not for FOV advantage then I would not even consider this camera. The guys at B&H have one and they have tested it as well. From Someone i can trust, Eye candy for everything else and 70D sensor technology....So NOTHING NEW from canon on the sensor other that more pixels on target......The AF is definitely a 1Dx system on a 1.6 crop sensor camera..... So It allows us cheap bastards ( like me ) who cant afford 400 F/2.8's to use our 300's again. Im traveling a lot next year, Alaska and Montana for wildlife trips so i need reach. This camera will fit my needs but its not what i was hoping for with regards to sensor improvement from canon........This next ful frame they come out with thats supposed to have 46 MP's,, better have some Sony style improvements in darks/shadows/noise control or myself and many others will be using these 5D3's a really long time. Waaaaaay to late i the game to switch ponys.

Team speed. Great work on your part here sir. I need to get together with you and buy your noise actions and have you teach me how to use them properly.

It depends on how you look at a camera. For those wanting best in market feature set, this camera is a home run. For those looking for better image quality, then this camera looks to be a small improvement but worth $1000 over the 70D? Maybe not.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

The core NR engine I use in my actions is Noiseware. There is nothing super special about the actions, you just run them, no masking of the image, nothing. I usually supply 3 different levels, light, medium, and aggressive. The trick really is processing the noise on each channel differently, each color needs special attention with various photoshop actions and Noiseware, then I run noiseware on the RGB total image at the end, then sharpen up the image a bit. I also make no profit on these, I make a contribution to POTN (which reminds me...) based on the funds received for the noise actions. :)

One would think running all these noise reduction actions would just obliterate the detail, but I have found that if you have the right recipe, you can retain most detail. Any detail that is defined by subtle tonality changes is damaged however, as seen here (look at the gentleman in the label).

My 12800 7D2 sample from above... trial action, but a bit too premature yet.

here is Kenny Boys partial review. Actually pretty darn good Ken.

Question. Same CF cards as 5D3 saw something that said CF cards were going to be thinner

Why not? What in this review swayed you? For the casual user, and non-techie, the 7D2 provides much cleaner out of camera JPG (~2 stops), and raw files that are cleaner than the 7D by 2/3 stop or so using DPP, especially if you underexpose. The noise is just easier to work with. Then you get all the other things, all for $100 over the price of the original 7D launch. I guarantee you I couldn't produce 12800 results out of the 7D that I think I can from the 7D2. :)

There should have been nothing surprising here, many of us have been saying that the 7D2 and 70D look to be very similar in IQ, but the 7D2 brings so much more feature and function to the table. If you don't need all that for sports and wildlife, for example, then I could see not being interested in the 7D2. I know many were holding out hope that the 7D2 would meet the IQ of the 1D4, etc, but that is an unreasonable expectation from Canon, given their historic incremental sensor upgrades.

All this is fine and dandy but doesn't affect those of us shooting in good light. Being on the 10 FPS and ridiculously sophisticated AF system. Yes please.

Yes true enough but the 6d was kind of a shock for a canon product line. Sure they crippled it and spit in canon's loyal users faces for selling a budget FF with a laughable 1/4000 max shutter speed. However the high ISO performance is better than the 1dx flagship. Canon had to cripple the 6d's max shutter speed to lower the performance for a budget ff. The 7dmk2 appears to be a 7d mk 1.1 with added bells and whistles with marginal high iso improvements.

More serious users will still buy the latest and not so greatest 7dmk2 simply because its the latest offerings from Canon to adapt to their lenses.

With lightroom I still found the 7d at high iso to produce plastic human faces with destroyed skin texture even with LR's excellent noise reduction. I'm really curious how 7dmk2 will perform. Human subjects for high ISO is something I'd like to see more often to be a benchmark test for image quality. photos of bottles and yarn is also helpful but I still think "photogs" are critical about skin detail on human subjects.

I would still like to play with a 7dmk2 though....
