Anyone know how to add a little motion blur behind someone to give the impression of movement? CS2 has a motion blur filter but it adds blur to the left and right instead of just the right like i'm after. The photo i'd like to do it to is below.

Anyone is welcome to try to add motion blur to this image, so long as you post your method :)

I duplicated the background layer, applied a motion blur to the new layer, added a layer mask and filled it with black, then went in with a small brush and painted white onto the mask where I wanted the blur to show through. This was a quick job, but with a little more patience and attention to detail you should be able to get exactly what you're looking for.

Hi Tim!

Had a little play with it for some 5 minutes. Used the polygonal tool to select the areas I wanted to blur, applied some feathering, then used motion blur set at 0 degrees. It's a bit rough but if you slow things down a bit you can get better effects... a couple of peoples faces were blurred out....

Edit... oops...:o the file was too big to attach. Uploading it to photobucket... man, I should find a job and upgrade to "broadband"...

I was really looking for the lazy mans way of doing this, like only doing the motion blur in one direction, but a mask is pretty easy thanks :)

Why not something like this, with the "camera" panning instead of being statonary.

Great idea Radtech, I think i'll offer all three versions of the image to the customer - though maybe that'd confuse them ;)

I did a mini-tutorial in THIS THREAD a while ago. Rather than retyping the whole thing, I will just give you the link.

The real trick to the motion blur:

The one thing that you can do to make the motion blur effect much more realistic is to remember this: When you pivot a real camera (Pan) you scribe an arc. That means that the more distant an item is, the greater it's apparent motion. On the sample shot, I used only two areas, the grass, white fence and "racing club" sign were blurred 10 pixels. The hills and the sky were blurred 30 pixels.

If I were doing this shot for my own uses I would use at least 4 or 5 different "bands" of blur, with each one at least doubling the one closer than itself.

In the example below, as spot located at distance 1 would have appeared to have moved 1 unit. At distance 2, 2 units, and 3 units at distance 3.

Rad
