I have a moving toddler. My dslrs won't work with my wife.....would like to stay between $250-500 preferably towards the lower end because my wife is not a gear head.

In that price range, it's tough. I would suggest the canon s110. It takes great photos, and has the canned modes, sports, kids pets mode. I think they are running around $250ish.malso full auto works great. I had the s100 a year or two ago and got great photos with it, and it's tiny.

I usually suggest to look at the water and drop proof cameras for this, most create great photos AND you can use them in the pool, tub, around flying spaghetti sauce, on the beach, playground, mud, snow. Anywhere. And you can give it to your kid w/o fear of damage, kids see the world differently and it's great fun to let them take over photography occasionally. I have the Pentax WG II for that, there's now a newer model out. It's not the smallest but I like the macro /microscope light ring, slow motion movie etc. Pretty easy to use.

40D, 5D3, a bunch of lenses and other things

I don't think the AF on the RX100 is going to be very fast and accurate. That is a fairly common complaint on that camera. The quality is good, but it's just not an action camera.

I would look at a Nikon 1, honestly. They have AF that is faster than many lower end DSLR, faster frame burst, great video with continuous AF and they have the same image quality as the Sony RX100 series (1" sensor)

There are Nikon 1 models starting at $200: http://www.bhphotovideo.com …1_mirrorless_digital.html (external link)

That S1 for $200 will tick all your boxes and give you near DSLR quality images with amazing fast AF and shutter lag. They also have a pretty sweet 18.5mm f1.8 (50mm equivalent) prime for low light for only $180.

Hi Frodge,
I'm curious to know if you settled on a point and shoot? I'm in the same boat, looking for a good pointand shoot for my wife to shoot our moving child and for travel.
Thank you .

Canon had refurbished G15s on sale for $249 a few days ago. I got one. Thoroughly impressed, especially with the f/1.8-2.8 lens. Since I can shoot about two stops lower ISO, the G15 rivals my 60D/15-85 for IQ, and has HUGE DOF. I already sold the 15-85 and am considering selling the 60D. The biggest drawback of P&S cameras is the shutter lag, but I'm getting used to it.

EDIT: Sale still on. http://shop.usa.canon.com …powershot-g15-refurbished (external link)

I am going to assume you mean 'shutter-lag', not shutter speed. There is a lag (delay) between pressing the button and the shutter releasing. None of Canon's P&S cameras eliminate it entirely. It is just part of what a P&S shoot is. You get used to it. If a high-IQ, fast lens, highly configurable, pocketable camera is what you want, the G15 is a nice option. It is not a dSLR with almost zero response time. Never will be.

or, alternatively...

world's smallest dslr - Canon's Rebel SL1.

the Mark II is expected to be announced in August.

it's a real dslr, amazingly small size, & ALL of your EF & EF-S lenses can be mounted and used.

SHE loves the SL1 with the 24mm STM - Canon's smallest lens.

ymmv.
