Hi everyone.

Currently i have Canon 350D and 700D cameras and am very happy with the overall performance of both. The 700D is my 'weapon of choice' at the moment as i have used it a lot for my motorsports shots.

Recently i have upgraded my glass to a 100-400L (as per the usual IS USM) and a mk1 24-70 f2.8.

So now i'm looking to replace the 350D.
I've had a look around and seen a 1D mkII n for £350 I like that it offers a big buffer, Dual cards, magnesium body and a good fps.

Is this camera still a good purchase in 2014? i know there are better cameras out there but i can't afford something like a 7D, 5DmkIII etc.
Print wise the biggest i will be printing is something like an 8x10. I also will not be shooting ANY video with this camera.

I don't really want to run another 700D.

Any opinions?

I own a Canon 60d and I have bought a second hand 5d mk1 for 500 euros earlier this year. I can whole heartedly recommend it, in some ways it wiped the floor (colors, dynamic range) with the 60d and in others the 60d is rather superior. (the flip-out screen, ability to IR trigger speedlites). They make a good pair and complement each other really well.

I looked at the 1d mkII as well for about the same price, but it seemed to be geared towards sports photography and that's not my style. Keep in mind the 1.3x crop format (if that matters to you). I am not really sure if the magnesium body is a big help as I think all bodies are very sturdy these days.

Thanks for the reply! :-) yeah i was looking at the 5d but was dissapointed to see it only offers 3fps burst vs the 8.5 of the 1d mkII.

Hey, I love my 5D "Classic", but if you want something "snippier", hey, spend the $$!

If you want the faster burst rate and all the other benefits of a sports camera I do think the 1d mkII is a better choice. I don't shoot sports which is why I went for the 5d :D.

However, does the burst rate of the 700d help you out here? I keep the 60d for all shots that the 5d can't manage and sometimes I even use both.

(recently, I had the 5d on a tripod on a 1.6 second shutter time and the 60d in burst mode as a model was doing a routine with fire, great shots from both cameras but in completely different ways)

I love the 700D, don't get me wrong, it's a great cam but i feel that i'm reaching it's limits sometimes, It can run a 5fps burst with a buffer of 22jpec or 6 raw, whereas the 1D has 8.5fps burst with buffer of 40jpeg and 20 raw, yes i know it has a lowe mpix but if i'm not blowing them up massive it should be good enough for printing an 8x10 right?

I dunno, i've kind of made my mind up but just wanted re-assurance!

If you need a higher framerate the 1d is a very good choice ;).
8 MP should serve you fine for a lot of purposes, but keep in mind that there is less room for cropping in post, so you will need to spend some more attention to your framing.

Personally I don't see much benefits from the 18 MP files of the 60d over the 5d's 13 MP files. And for reassurance: Many photographers have happily used the 1d for many years and got professional results ;).

I was thinking this, i mean the 100-400 L series was released in 1998 and still regarded as one of the best. I know bodies and sensors have come a long way but if i'm happy with the quality of my 350D and i use the right glass to pull in enough without cropping i should be good right?

Some samples from my 350D after Facebook's terrible compression:

Good glass makes a lot of difference. But looking at your signature, I really don't see any bad glass. Key is if you are happy with the pictures from the 350d, not what anyone else thinks. In any case it is hard to judge a picture on facebook.

It's more important to look at what you actually need to improve your photography. If that's framerate, the 1d will help you out. If you're looking to learn then the 1d will probably still be a good choice. The 5d helped me out a lot in that area ;).

To improve i feel that i need a higher frame rate and bigger buffer as i have missed a few shots due to the cam saying 'busy' while clearing the buffer (i presume) I also want to be less affraid of my cam (i'm not taking it out as much as i'm worried about it breaking, I heard the 1D series are pretty robust. as far as lenses go i will be getting a nifty fifty too.

I bought my 700D as an upgrade to my 350D, i thought it was great it did video etc but i think i've used video once in a year.
