5 hours? Thats a long time. Have you NOT allowed updates in a long time? Do you leave computer on and autoupdate set? Internet connection speed?

When I do a fresh install of Win7 SP1, there's something like 130 updates to be installed. On 20 mpbs cable, it doesn't take anywhere near 5 hours to download. You're either on the slowest DSL you can buy or your computer has a major problem.

I did an update on a older laptop with a little over a years worth of updates and it took about an hour.
How much did you have to download?
What is your internet speed?
When was your last update?
Was it just windows or office as well and/or other Microsoft software?

I agree with previous comments, sounds like this was a machine that hasn't run Windows Update in a while? The monthly patch Tuesday updates usually download pretty quickly. Actually Microsoft's patching process is fairly painless since it's predictable....you know when it's going to happen and they seem to try to not do any out of band patching unless something is really critical. It's vendors like Adobe and Apple that drive me nuts with random patches all the time. Especially Adobe. In face I don't use Adobe Reader for PDF's anymore entirely because their patching process sucks.

This sounds like a combination of a damaged Windows installation and a slow Internet connection.

Are you including the antivirus definition updates in that statement? Those come down daily, if not multiple times per day. But if you have auto updates enabled, you wouldn't even notice since they don't require a reboot.

I would certainly hope so! I wouldn't want to be using an OS that a vendor isn't updating. So yes, OS updates should be "endless".

Something very strange is going on. There have been a few windows update recently, but nothing like that. It may be time for a reinstall of the OS, which will result in a lot of patches.

Your on a 20mb/s as advertise but what are you actual speeds? Or is that your actual speed?

There are a lot of factors including slow download speeds, slow server speeds, slow computer, etc. When you say turning it on, are you fully powering down or hibernate or sleep?

Just yesterday I assembled a new PC from parts, installed Win 7, downloaded all patches including SP1, downloaded and installed all the drivers required and installed a couple applications in about 5 hours. I agree with the others, there is something wrong with your PC or your ISP is not delivering the bandwidth you pay for.

A reinstall of the OS will not result in a lot of patches, unless you have an updated/newer ISO file that contains the patches.

If you use the same file/DVD to install the OS, you will need to download all service packs and updates for the OS, plus all of the service packs and updates for MS Office (if you're using it). There can be over 1.5Gb of updates, depending on which language support packs you add, so yes, it can take a while if you don't have a fast, stable internet connection.

Go to www.speedtest.net (external link) to test what kind of connection speeds you're actually getting. Test your wifi signal, and your wired connection.

Change your update interval to weekly. It should help with the updates. But I would also check to see what is taking so long. The download or the actual installation.

speedtest.net is good site to measure your internet speed.
