Hey,

Just a quick question, when you give your clients the final photos (digital), do you give them the full resolution or resized (ie: for a print up to 8x12)?

Thanks

Depends on the client and what they need, and what they want to pay for.

I'll often deliver two versions: One for web sharing and monitor-lookin' at 1024px on the long edge, and one resized to 3600px on the long edge. It's rare that I'll give one that's not scaled down to 3600px or smaller - if they need larger than that, I'll try to glean more details of what they're using it for, and size it appropriately for that use.

One of my client (a picky one) wants one photo for a canvas, that’s fine, then she wants mostly all 16x20. And she wants enough resolution so that she can crop the faces to make 8x10s for the rest...

I tell my clients that the finals are up-to 8x12 and then if they want a bigger one let me know. But not the whole set! lol

Why not the whole set? Did you not charge enough to cover? I deliver almost all digitals very few prints. I almost never downsize the files (I do give them a second set that is downsized for Social Media). But I also charge enough to not care what they do with the files after they download them from our site.

Well since she wants all 16x20 (digital) I'll have to go down to maybe around 220 ppi. The quality won't be the same if she prints smaller sizes?

I would let her know your concern and then give her what she asks for.

Yes, I do give them a full resolution version, but it's a JPEG, and I include a PDF file stating that such files shouldn't be modified or resized due to their lossy format.

As a matter of fact I give them three versions: full resolution (for printing), medium resolution (for web), and very small size/res (for social media).

I give 3600x2400 digital files to the clients with full resolution reserved for their Smugmug ordering gallery.
