Hi there. I took this picture at an orphanage my family visits on a regular basis. I showed the kids at the orphanage the back of my camera and they all broke out into huge smiles. I would like to print this and take it down for them to hang up. Any thoughts on post processing differently than I have done?

Thanks.

Adorable picture, great capture!

This is how I would process it:
I did a 16x9 crop to remove that little distracting bit in the upper left and a little of the lower foreground. Brought out the details in the ground and made it less hot. Also made the dog's coat a little more toward black, or that is how it looks on my monitor :)

nice edit iroctd.

great gesture 75andSunny. As the father of twins, my boys really like having pictures they can handle, a pile of wallet size prints might go a long way with these kids.

Can I ask what you do at the orphanage? Just this morning I was thinking about our local Big Brothers Big Sisters organization and how I could use my photography gear to help out a little.

This is perfect! Thank you. I have minimal processing skills so may I ask how you did this? I am assuming brought the exposure down and increased the blacks?

We live in San Diego so we try to go monthly to an orphanage in Tijuana. We go with an organization that helps out two orphanages down there. We drive down to the border, walk across with as many supplies as we can carry (things like diapers, cleaning supplies, food, etc.) and then taxi to the orphanage. From there we play with the kids. My husband and 10 yr. old daughter usually play soccer and baseball and my 4 yr old colors. Our group brings craft projects, books, flashcards, etc. I always take our camera and both my husband and I take pictures of the kids. The littlest ones will walk up and say "Cheese!" and wait for their picture to be taken. Mid afternoon we head back home.

The organization we go with has used some of my pictures on their facebook page to advertise upcoming trips. I used my photos as part of a fundraiser for the orphanage. Besides that, we haven't used our photographs other than blogging and facebook.

I'm a hobbyist so using my photography for something purposefully is very rewarding! I'm sure the Boys and Girls club could use your skills!

awesome work!

i was thinking that taking pics for the kids to have would be nice, but doing some social media work would probably provide much more long term value for whatever group by raising awareness and participation. That kind of stuff is right up my alley anyway.

Oh, don't want to put words in iroctd's mouth, but understanding the histogram and white point is where you want to start on a pic like that. The levels and curves dialog in photoshop are where you would begin.

Certainly, here are the settings.. (linking due to size)
I did everything in Lightroom, have yet to put photoshop into practice but he's gone is correct, levels and curves are very powerful. I've yet to knuckle down and learn curves.
