Preseason games are a different animal to shoot, at least for me. The dasher boards do not have any adverts on them yet, so they are all white. Makes the lighting reflect a little more, but there's no contrast to shoot against. Also the game seems to be at a little slower pace and doesn't really have the intensity. On top of that, the team wears their warm-up jerseys, so they don't look quite as good.

Edited these at the game with a new laptop, so my settings are off just a bit. My reds seem to be a bit hot/oversaturated so I need to recalibrate and check those again. Anyway, here's the first few shots of the season:

What lens did you use to capture these photos? Excellent shots per usual.

Canon 1D MKIV, 1D MKIII, Canon 70-200 f2.8, Canon 400 f2.8, Canon 16-35mm f2.8.

Thanks guys. All of these were with the 1DX+300 2.8 mk2 combo.

Season opener this upcoming Saturday, so should have shots of that game up shortly after.

These all look great! Love that there are no distracting ads on the boards!

Many thanks. Unfortunately, the boards will not be bare much longer as the sponsors will litter the sides.

We should field a competitive team this year. Ex-NHL goaltender Michael Leighton was sent down from the Blackhawks, so we should have a great net minder, and last year we had the second-highest scoring defenseman in the league with Adam Clendening, and we just picked up last years highest scoring D-man in the league, T.J. Brennan. Couple that with top ranked Finnish prospect Teuvo Teravainen, and we should break our three year playoff drought.

If it wasn't such a long drive I'd invite you to head over here to shoot in our barn. How far are you from Cleveland? Maybe you can get in on some Lake Erie Monsters games, or float over to Grand Rapids to hit the Griffins.

the Griffins would be my best bet. about 3 hours or so. cleveland is right around 4 hours and youre close to 7...

i dont have any kind of credentials though so im sure id have a pretty difficult time getting down on the glass. im limited to my 70-200 2.8L...

thanks for the invite though! if anything comes up and im heading west, ill definitely let you know im on my way!!!!

These are really nice. Love how they pop! Guessing your shooting above the glass. Do you move around much during the periods? The whites look great and the ice isn't blown out. How do set your white balance? Sorry for all the questions, just love the look!

Ben

Thanks Ben. Glad to help with any questions you have.

I am shooting over the glass, using the 1DX+300 2.8 mk2.

I shoot everything in RAW, and since we have LED lighting I can set my WB to Auto since its the same temperature all the time. When I go into post, I have a preset for each location and I just select that preset and I'm 95% complete.
