Yeah this is the place to be for fall colors. Just wish the hike was easier Even getting to Lake Colchuck is so worth it. This is Colchuck in July 2014

if you do it...go in via colchuck. Hiking from the Snow Lakes trailhead isn't very scenic and its longer.

Yes, exactly! Thanks for the reminder. We did this last year, first weekend of October. Unfortunately the fall colors were late (I guess?) and it snowed ~2 ft. the week before. We went up/down Asgard and it was tough. I'm hoping for no snow and better colors this year, no rain would be nice too.

Looks like you probably got ideal conditions?!? <--- me, green with envy!

(edit) looks like Colchuck area is still pretty green?

yes colchuck and lower elevations still have some green larches

I went up last year Oct 10th and had snow to my knees:

What pack do you use to carry your camping / hiking and photography gear? If you set up camp, do you have a separate bag to take your camera with you? Particularly in the winter, any tips for balancing additional [clothing] layers vs the lenses or other camera gear you want to bring?

For packs I usually go Arcteryx, Granite Gear or lately Osprey. I carry my camera gear in lowepro bags that I can then head out with. IN winter its a balance of having critical warm clothing items vs making sure I have the lenses. In those winter shots. I had my 5d2, zeiss 50 and 28mm primes.
