I’m hoping to pick up a 70D in the next few months and am not sure what to do about the lens. I used to have a T3i with a Tamron 17-50 and Tamron 90 macro and loved those lenses. Ideally I’d like to get them again for the 70D but have read that people are getting errors when making video using 3rd party lenses. Has this issue been fixed?
If I didn’t go with Tamron then it looks like I’d have to go the Canon route and it’d come down to the 18-55, 18-135, 15-85 or 17-55. Before getting the Tamron 17-50 I had a Canon 18-55 IS on my T3i and thought it was pretty basic and felt very cheap. I’m not sure if the quality (IQ and build) of the 18-55 STM is much of a step up from the IS version or not.

The best video lenses for the 70D are the STM lenses.

I think your 17-50 will be OK with it. My 28-75 was having issues on the 70D that it never had on the t4i. So I contacted Tamron and here is the reply I got.

Thank you for contacting Tamron. I'm sorry about the focusing issues you are having. This may indeed be due to the new hybrid autofocus system used in the 70D. We are currently working on a lens update that should resolve this issue and we hope to have the update for the 28-75 out soon. If you like I can add you to my email list and contact you once we have this available.

Kind regards,

He did send me a list of good lenses.

Typically I could provide you with a compatibility chart but it has been taken off our web site for updating. The following lenses would be compatible with the 70D:

70-300 VC (model A005)
24-70mm (A007)
17-50mm (B005)
10-24mm (B001)
18-270mm(B008)
16-300mm(B016)
28-300mm(A010)

In addition, any newly released lenses should be compatible as well. If you have any questions about any of these lenses please let me know.

Tamron customer service is AWESOME. I would suggest contacting them with any questions you might have.

Thanks for the reply. I will likely be doing very little video, but that being said, should the need arise I would want to be able to use my lens for it without getting an error.

Thanks for the info. Out of interest, how to lens updates get applied? Do you have to take the lens into a dealer?

Any idea how they're going to push out the lens updates on existing lenses?

Yes and no. Depends if you auto focus entirely. I'll bat for STM lenses for video, but my Sigma 50-150mm f/2.8 non OS is brilliant if I manually focus when gear is mounted on a tripod. It has a very smooth zooming action and is sharp as a tack. My Canon primes are also fantastic when manually focused.

Having said that, I shot a video today entirely using my EF-S 10-18mm STM. Love the wide end for video.

When DSLRs were first marketed with video I said I'd never shoot video. After more than 35 years of still photography I'm now shooting more and more video.

I had possible gone as far as I could with stills photography having worked as a pro for 28 years. With video the learning curve is very steep and I'm having a great time,, bloopers and all.

You will need to ship the lens to the repair center to get the update.
If you contact the customer service guys and ask them to put you on a email list. The will send you a message when an update comes out for your particular lens. In my case it is the 28-75.

It looks like the 17-50 (B005) is the VC version of the lens. I had the non-VC and would go with that again since it's supposed to be sharper.
