Slightly embarrassed to be asking this question, but...

I saw a photographer using a piece of equipment, and I want to buy one. I just don't know its name!

The piece of equipment is a white panel; it appears that has a base section that sits on the ground, you then pull the panel up from the base section; it's probably on a roller inside so you unroll it up to about 6 or seven feet high. Then there is a support that you connect to the base unit and the top of the panel, and it stays vertical (ish).

It's a bit like an exhibition stand, but all white

I would be looking to use this as a kind of baffle for the edges of my HiLIte when taking photos with more than one or two people in them

Can anyone tell me what the name of this kind of thing is, please?

Thank you!

sure thing. There's about a hundred different ways to do that including do it yourself rigs.

Also called 'scrim'.

A scrim reduces light intensity, while a silk diffuses. There is some crossover effect depending on the material, and the usage (e.g. grazing angle). I recently acquired a diffusion sampler from Rosco of 1'x1' sheets, and it's fascinating to see the differing impact (if you're into this sort of thing :)).

Top left is Rosco full diffusion (plastic), top right is Matthews china silk, bottom left is undiffused. This silk is a much larger light source @ 2'x3' but lower diffusion: shadows lifted more but with distinct edges. Note that the coffee cup is generating local fill. For critical color, UV from the flash and whiteners in the diffusion material can induce a significant blue cast.

Thank you for the demonstrations. There clearly is quite a significant extra softening from the Rosco product.
