Having moved away from much of my sports shooting, I sold off any big glass I had and now use the 1.4x II TC on my 70-200 MkII and find that with decent (not great, just decent) light and relatively smaller crops, I see very little degradation in the IQ of the images. Obviously, if you are going to crop less, patience becomes key and you really have to allow the action toe develop and come to you. This is actually a great approach anyway and one I learned years ago from some extremely well respected shooters here and elsewhere. In the end, I think I makes you a better shooter and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend using the TC if you either can't afford longer glass or can't justify it even if you can afford it. Obviously, all that goes out the window if you are willing to put a 600 f/4 in my hands!
