Well these are lower ISO than some of the others (around 2000), still fairly heavy crops. In terms of camera setting differences though what I tried on this day were a combination of shutter speeds between 1/1000-1/1600 both with IS in mode I and IS off completely. I didn't discern a noticeable difference in quality of focus or sharpness with any combination.

The only other things that were different were firmware 1.1.1, and reducing the accel / decel tracking from +1 to the default of 0.

More with the R5, this time with the RF 70-200. Finding I really like shooting soccer on this size field with the shorter lens.

I like the look I get from 2.8 but I feel like 80% of the action is out of reach with 200 mm. I like to shoot from near the corners so I can cover both goals with the zoom and get the faces of the attacking team. I use a 100-400 now but would probably upgrade to the 100-500 when deals become available.

I usually shoot from the corners with the 100-400 as well, but yeah that look from the 2.8 is great. Just need to convince the wife that I need a 300 or 400 2.8 ߘ.

I expect next year when my daughter moves up to the high school field I¢ll definitely be wanting the extra reach of the 100-400.

I'd recommend the Sigma 120-300 f2.8 Sport lens for soccer/football. I've used it for national and International football and it works as well as the Canon 300f2.8, it's more versatile and about half the price.

Tested a remote camera behind the goals on Saturday, triggered using a guitar pedal footswitch. Takes a bit of getting used to, in terms of getting your brain to think of when to press the switch when you're also operating the main camera body and 400mm lens, but less hassle than mounting the transmitter on the main camera body and firing off loads of shots you don't need, or switching the transmitter on and off during a game.

No HS or college soccer around here this year but my kids played in a youth summer travel league, it was nice to shoot some sports again.
