Hi chaps I have a 77mm lens and need a GND filter ... I understand that a rectangular filter allows for the filter to be slid up and down to match the horizon ... are the holders lens size specific or do they come with step rings ? As usual I guess quality (therefore expense) is imposrtant to retain image quality but are there cheaper holders that fit the filters ? ... also a bit confused by "P" series and "Z" series etc ... any advice very welcome.

Roger

If you're mentioning P and Z, I'm safely assuming you're talking about the Cokin system. Get the Z-Pro (external link) version, which is 100mm and compatible with Lee's system, that way you can use the large filters, which in your case you need, since your lens has a large diameter. That kit has resin filters: glass is of course better and longer lasting —and higher priced— but I've used those resin ones without noticeably loss in quality or colour casts.

Yes, the filter holder requires an adapter ring, and they make them for different lens's diameters: this is the one (external link) you need.

I wouldn't skimp on the holder. You get what you pay for.

Or, go with the Lee Foundation Kit and an ultra wide adapter from them.

I'm curious if there is any difference between that and the Z-Pro and using 3 slots whether the Z-Pro would vignette or not vs. the Lee.

No, the Z-Pro does not vignette if you use all three slots; but it does vignette if you rotate it beyond 30-45 degrees on wide angle lenses, regardless of the number of slots being used.
