Does the 6D use the same wireless ETTL as the 60D or do I need the super-pricey radio flash setup?

The 6D doesn't do wireless like the 60D because there is no popup flash. To use wireless flash you need a master flash or controller in the hotshor. Radio flash need not be thst expensive, see YN622c for details.

I already have some 430EX's for wireless ETTL. Maybe I'll just get a 90EX if I go the 6D route.

Go radio. Its far superior in every way. No worries about line of sight.

I've never had any worries about line of sight so far, and no way I'm spending $500 on a flash.

I do have some old wireless triggers, but I like ETTL.

Im talking $120 bucks on triggers, not sure where you got $600 flash. But go shead snd waste money on an inferior system if it makes you happy

Sorry you are taking it personally that I am OK with the older Wireless E-TTL system. But thanks for your opinions.

600EX RT is the $500 flash mentioned.

Who mentioned it? Please do yourself a favor and look into the yn622 triggers for just sbout the investment of the master flash you can have a vastly superior system thst plug and play simple. Im not sure why you arent open to the idea but dont let the opportunity pass without doing a little research.

I've never had the Canon optical system let me down indoors. The 60D's flash-master mode will set off any Canon flash (I have: 430EX II, 2x 550EX, 580EX II) within 20-30 feet, INDOORS, even if you hide it behind the furniture. When I use my 580EX II as a master, I gain Group C (very handy), and access to all the things a 580 can do: FEB, Stroboscopic and such. I have never pushed the limits, but I am sure the 580EX II can optically drive other Canon flashes, all by itself, out to at least 40 feet, indoors. That is a big room. I've never used a flash outdoors for more than on-camera fill.

I picked up the 90EX to trigger my 430EXs, it does High Speed Sync mode, which the 60D would not. The 60D does have the option of contributing to the exposure though, and the 90EX does not when in wireless mode. At ~$60 it was the cheapest way to add wireless (E-TTL) flash capabilities (for 2 off camera flashes) to my 6D. Since I already had the two 430EX flashes.

Yes, and as stated above, indoors it works fine, with the added benefit that you don't need to equip your remote flashes with any extra equipment. The receiver for the light pulses is built-in.

It's also correct that a radio system is more versatile. I moved to that since I sometimes want to use flashes outdoors from other positions than on camera, and then light controlled slaves works in too few situations.

Certainly. If I used OC flash outdoors, I'd be looking at radio stuff.
