A short while ago I bought a DSTE (sp?) grip for my 6D. Until today, I was happy with it. While on a shoot this afternoon, my 6D just shut off. It took me a few minutes to figure out the grip was flexing and that allowed the power contacts to unseat in the body. I just wiggled the grip and pushed it back in, and it worked fine... for a while. That happened about 3 times, today. I missed shots, which really P!$$#$ me off! My $2,300 6D/17-40 fell down on the job because of a $39 accessory. I do use a PeakDesigns Cuff, which is hooked to the grip, not the body. I use my 60D the same way and have never had this happen. Oh, the screw-mount things WAS still tight.

Does the Canon grip EVER do this? Has anyone ever had ANY grip do this? I've been using cheap grips for years. Opteka, Polaroid, and now DSTE. I've never had a problem like this before.

Sorry about what happened to your gear, I remember your thread. I have yet to read of a canon grip do this. Now I'm off to search for canon grips failing. I keep looking at the vello battery grip as it has many positive reviews here and on B&H website.

Thanks. I need to go add those comments to my review of the grip on Amazon.com.

Yes, do that. People need to know.

There is the old adage "you get what you pay for", but that's not always true. It depends. Sometimes a less expensive third part alternative is just as good. I've had good luck with third-party camera batteries, for example. I see no reason to pay Canon's prices if I don't have to. On the flip-side, I'm leery of third-party filters.

I often read people on here posting an age old saying, you get what you pay for. This usually helps people feel better as to why cheaper photographers are getting "their gigs".

In my opinion, this does apply to hardware as well. Especially when you are buying something 1/10th the OEM Cost.

I revised my review from 5 stars to 1 star. It takes Amazon a few days to review and post consumer reviews. Here is a link to the (which I certainly do NOT recommend) product:

I had problems with the Meike grip I purchased for my 60D so I buy Canon grips now. They are expensive but work.

I had an OPTEKA that worked fine on my 500D. Tried one on my 60D; MAJOR FAIL. I went to a Polaroid. I've been using the Polaroid grip on my 60D for 4 years, with no problems. On the 6D, I tried (I think) Meike, Polaroid, and Zeikos. None of them even worked right out of the box. I bought my DSTE, and it worked for less than 3 months. I'll buy a Canon BG-E13, and be done with it. I can't afford to brick my Camera.

Had good luck with third party grips on my Rebel and 50D, was able to get the OEM one for the 5D off CL for a $100.

+1 on the Polaroid, I have one for my 6d and haven't had an issue with it in over a year

Where did you buy it? The ones on Amazon are shipped by DBRoth, and have a pretty lousy review rating. I found one at polaroidstore.com. No reviews, though. Does anyone else sell Polaroid equipment?

Thanks. I'm glad you had good luck with that one. The Polaroid for 6D gets as many bad reviews as good. I'm just going to order a Canon BG-E13. I love my Polaroid grip on my 60D. I'm done playing with after-market stuff.
