Canon 200 2.0 Mount Issues?

I expressed interest in purchasing a Canon 200 2.0 recently to a fellow photographer. He warned me that my 5D mk iii body would not be able to handle the lens and that I would have mount issues. Is there any validity to this statement?

My cynical side felt as though he was knocking me for owning 5dmkiii bodies instead of the professional bodies as he owns four or five D4s.

If Canon EF mounts were prone to break, the howls of misery would shatter the planet.

Of course, someone is taking you for a fool.

Among the heaviest EF lenses in typical use is the 400mm f/2.8 IS at 3,900 grams. The Canon 200mm f/2 IS lens is a relative lightweight at 2,500 grams. If you haven't heard any complaints about lens mount failure from the 400mm lens you won't hear any from the lighter 200mm lens.

In the 1990's equally qualified camera "experts" predicted a rash of failures because a Canon EOS film camera used a plastic EF mount. None broke.

By the way, from the record of actual use by real photojournalists, a Canon 5D Mk. III is every bit a "professional" camera as anything else.

Sadly, people are prone to rush to believe predictions of disaster with camera equipment rather than trust evidence of that equipment's capabilities.

The only mounting issue I can imagine is the cost of doing so.

I don´t like plastic mounts - but that one is quite stable.

After a mount conversion for my Canon FD 300/2.8L lens I tested it with a EOS 500n - with plastic mount.
I could handhold the boda, with the 2300g lens attached even horizontal - still holding only the camerabody

None. None what so ever.

My recommended course of action? stop referring to this troll as a "fellow" altogether, and replace the other half of the title "photographer" with the surrogate term "Nikon fanboy".

Seriously this is total and utter B.S. of the worst kind.

Nope no truth to it at all. I only hand hold my 200 2L with 5DIIs. In fact I remove the foot. I have had the lens since 2008 and have had NO PROBLEMS.

What utter, elitist BS! (Or perhaps it's a really convoluted justification to convince the spouse one must spend $5000 on a camera body, though I doubt someone who has spent more than that on a lens already will have to make an argument like this.)

I've used 500/4 and 300/2.8 on Elan 7, 10D, 30D, 50D, 7D, 5DII extensively without even a hint of a problem. Both of those are bigger and heavier than 200/2.

You do need to use common sense handling heavy lenses. If I were using an SL1 with a 200/2, I'd probably carry it all around by the lens, not the camera. As it is, I use straps on both the big lenses and the camera, so the weight of each is supported. And often when carrying them by hand, it's by the tripod mounting ring foot/handle.

Pretty silly statement. Any lens that comes with a lens strap like the 200/2 and the rest of the superteles should be used in conjunction with the camera strap. The camera mount alone will flex if the lens strap is not used with heavy lenses. The repair cost to replace the lens mount on the 200/2, 300/2.8, 400/2.8, 500/4 and the 600/4 is about $400.

i have my 200L IS on my 5dmk3 and shot with it quite a few times without any issues or noticeable issues, handheld


I'm guessing it'll be ok

No mount issue with mine either but some older serial falls into the range that have IS noise with the 5D3 which Canon will fix for free.

I dont think i've ever heard of a mount breaking that wasn't caused by accidentally dropping it

I wish it were true, I got my 500mm f/4 L IS for about half price because someone broke the mount. Cost $25.00 and about 15 minutes to get it back up to full value!

If anyone has a 200mm f/2 with a broken mount they'll sell for $2k I'll take it!
