I expressed interest in purchasing a Canon 200 2.0 recently to a fellow photographer.
He warned me that my 5D mk iii body would not be able to handle the lens and that I would have mount issues. Is there any validity to this statement?
My cynical side felt as though he was knocking me for owning 5dmkiii bodies instead of the professional bodies as he owns four or five D4s.
What utter, elitist BS! (Or perhaps it's a really convoluted justification to convince the spouse one must spend $5000 on a camera body, though I doubt someone who has spent more than that on a lens already will have to make an argument like this.)
I've used 500/4 and 300/2.8 on Elan 7, 10D, 30D, 50D, 7D, 5DII extensively without even a hint of a problem. Both of those are bigger and heavier than 200/2.
You do need to use common sense handling heavy lenses. If I were using an SL1 with a 200/2, I'd probably carry it all around by the lens, not the camera. As it is, I use straps on both the big lenses and the camera, so the weight of each is supported. And often when carrying them by hand, it's by the tripod mounting ring foot/handle.
