Alternatives to the Sigma 12-24 HSM II?

I am considering the Sigma 12-24 HSM II. I need something wider than my 17-40. The EF 14mm f/2.8L is out for two reasons: fixed FL & price. I looked at the Rokinon/Samyang/Bower 14mm f/2.8, but would rather have a zoom in this range, if possible; 12mm is considerably wider than 14mm. The price is right, though.

A 10 or 12mm to 20 or 24 mm, manual focus lens would be perfect. I don't get why you'd even put AF in this (the Sigma) lens. I'll be shooting it for maximum DOF, most likely at f/8 and smaller, so I don't much care what the maximum aperture is. It will be used on a 6D.

May I safely conclude that there ARE no alternatives to the Sigma 12-24 HSM II?

Nikon 14-24 + adapter. Won't be cheap though. I don't believe there are any other alternatives for zooms that are less than 16mm. You could also try the Sigma 10-20 + 1.4x extender. I've heard it gives pretty decent results.

The Sigma 10-20mm + 1.4X does very well on a FF, but only gives you a 14-28mm. While noticeably wider than the 17 end of the L, not wider than the Sigma 12-24.

The Sigma 8-16mm + 1.4X also works well on a FF. It gives about an 11-22mm. It keeps AF (not that when stopping down at the wide needs it), and minor vignetting (if the hood is removed). If you can find it used, it should be significantly cheaper than the Sigma 12-24mm.

I picked up the 8-16mm used because I knew the 10-20 did well with 1.4X on FF (I have it), I got it for a good price, I was able to try before I bought, plus I do still use my 7D (along with the 5D) so I can also use it without the TC on the crop. I don't do ulta-wide often, but this gets me through when I need very wide. I just have to decide if I want to keep my 10-20 as it was a gift.

The sigma 8-16 while it may fit onto a FF camera it is designed for APS-C there is massive vignetting- actual blackness just like a fisheye. The sigma 12-24 is the widest FF UWA for your 6D unless you consider the 8-15 fisheye. (there is the new tamron 15-30 f2.8 which is wider than the current Canon offering but still nowhere near the sigma AND not yet released. and the possible rumour of the Canon 11-24 F4 L but its not yet announced!!!!) OH and dont forget that with this wide a lens your dof will be practically from here to infinity at all apertures you wont necessarily need F8 to get a huge DOF.

Two things. The Canon 11-24 is rumored to be priced at or near $3,000. No thanks.
Both the Canon and Sigma feature auto-focus. I would never use AF on a lens like this. The ENTIRE point of that lens is HUGE DOF. I'll probably get the 12-24 for Christmas.

well you could get the 8-16mm, and pair it with a 1.4XTC...would give you 11mm...although i'm not sure how sharp the corners would be...but it's a pretty good lens on it's own, and stopped down may work well.

For about $200 more, I can get the 12-24. I guess that is where I am going. I don't mind manual focus, like the Bower/Samyang/Rokinon, but I'm afraid 14mm wouldn't be wide enough.

That is why the addition of the 1.4X TC. Remove the hood and not much more vignetting than an ultrawide made for a FF. So sorry, it will not have massive vignetting. I know I have the combo.

That said, I still say get a lens that was designed for what you want. So an ultra-wide lens for a FF camera most likely will be better than a "modified" crop lens on a FF.

Why do it - I almost never need wider than 17 so my 17-40L is usually all I need. If the off chance I need wider, the 8-16 with 1.4X TC covers me.

I've run into situations, rarely, where my 10-22 was not wide enough on crop, and now my 17-40 not being wide enough on the 6D. I am not going for huge perspective distortion; just trying to get an interesting shot of a corn harvest. Beans are easier because they are so short; I can work from the ground. For corn, I have to limit myself by riding on top of the combine, or some other piece of farm equipment. From the ground, all you get is corn in the shot. For all of you non-farm-country people, doesn't that sound just a little hill-billy-ee?

if you have the 10-22mm, you could always pop the baffle out and use it on your 5D...don't use it at 10mm, so it doesn't interfere with the mirror though
