Hi All

I have been trying to find out whether I can set my 5D3 so that RAW goes to the CF card and video goes to the SD card but cannot readily see this possible function in the manual...............yes, it explains the copy to both cards, RAW to one JPEG the other, sequential switching from CF to SD as the CF fills.

But can it do what I am suggesting???

TIA for any insight :)

I don't have that specific model, but videos normally go to the primary card. You can set RAWs to go to the secondary card, but only when you shoot something to the primary card too. Small jpegs, if nothing else.

This would be a good feature for those who mix video and stills, but I do not thin it exists on any Canon.

A pity :( I use 8GB CF cards which in RAW gives me approx. 220 images which is fine on the basis of not eggs in one basket :) But what I was hoping to utilise was say a 32GB SD card for HD videos as and when required. Bearing in mind I am talking about simply(?) allocating one of the cards, in this case the SD (95MB/s speed), for video i.e. not simultaneous recording of stills and video. Surely not that hard to set in the firmware?

I came upon just such a situation when I was doing a favour for old family friends to tale photographs at their 40th wedding anniversary party..............took 2 off 8GB CF and no SD had switched to the second card and had used about 2/3rds of the space and then speeches started...............thinks I switch to video...............OK got most but then "CF card full".

OK related question? If you set recording to auto switch the cards but then rather than carry on using the SD card you swap out the CF and then 'force' the recording back to the CF and then that one fills up and then auto switches again...............and you have set the image counting to continuous sequential what is the end result by way the of the image numberings???

I've tried to find this option too though i don't shoot video, but in case of ... i wanted my video on the SD too with the jpg.
It might be BS what i will say next, but may be we cannot (or Canon does not implant it) due to the hardware limitation on the SD card side (if i recall what i've read somewhere on POTN, it's 20MB max speed, so whatever speed SD card you put in, cannot go faster than 20MB)

Hmmm! has that been stated/documented anywhere by Canon or other test reviewers?

Looks like the only way to implement the CF stills and SD videos is to set the card select to "standard" and manually pick the card depending on the choice needed...............but is there a quick way to select the CF or the SD, one button press or two at the most...............the more I think about this could be a menu option where the card selection choice should have been there pick that says "when switching from still to video do you want the SD card to be chosen" simples eh! :) But back to the point is there a rapid way to switch from CF to SD as needed manually?

Edit ~ found this about the cards in the manual page 370:-

If the card’s writing speed is slow, movie shooting may stop
automatically. When the compression method is set to [IPB], use a CF
card with a reading/writing speed of at least 10 MB per sec., and a SD
card with a reading/writing speed of at least 6 MB per sec. When the
compression method is set to [ALL-I (I-only)], use a CF card with a
reading/writing speed of at least 30 MB per sec., and a SD card with a
reading/writing speed of at least 20 MB per sec. To find out the card’s
reading/writing speed, refer to the card manufacturer’s website (p.219).

You might find the answers here or there

"As seen above, the 5D III can utilize both SDHC/SDXC and CompactFlash memory cards. A sustained write speed of up to 167MB/sec is supported when a fast-enough memory card is used. The UDMA-7 Class-10 CompactFlash standard is supported, but the SDXC UHS-1 standard is not. Use UDMA-7 Class-10 CompactFlash for ultimate performance - the secondary high speed burst figures (after the "/" in the table above) are UDMA-7 specs. I'm still using SDHC cards when speed is not important to me as it makes uploading easy via my laptop's built-in card reader. "
