Again, I'd like to see any previous tests that might have taken place. I've looked and can't find any, and I research potential purchases ad nausem and don't recall seeing them before. I ask because I may soon have access to older AF lenses that I won't turn down, but shortcomings will be good to know.

Thanks.

Just try out the lenses and see if they work for you or not. Technical specs won't really tell the story of whether the lens/body combo will shoot well, whatever the subject you want to shoot. Older lenses will most likely AF slower, and they don't benefit from the newer close-loop AF communications on the newest of lenses, etc. Doesn't mean they won't work. People get too tied up to the mathematical and technical specs of the hardware, which takes away from the fun of photography.

Also, this should really be a new topic under lenses, as it has nothing really to do with the 7D2 specifically. ;)

Yep, that was my point.

some of romy's shot are pretty good and the 7 d mk 2 is looking ok :D- but from what I can see are a iso 320 in the main - be good to see a good few at the 800 - 1600 maybe 2400 mark - that would be the real clincher for me if its a lot better than the 7 dc- as a faster tv is worth gold to wildlife amateurs like me !!!

I appreciate the fact that Romy has taken the time to post these shots.
Although the shots came out fine, I don't think the autofocus was really being tested all that much.
I will say that I'm not familiar with these types of birds, or the sizes of them.
That said, without counting, it looks as though about half of the shots were of birds just getting into flight,
or birds that were flying perpendicular to camera. Not that tough of a shot with any of the modern day cameras.

The shots of the birds coming straight at the camera looked pretty good also.

I've seen Romy's shots before, and he's a hell of a photographer, but I guess I'll need more for me to jump on the band wagon.

Well, it does, but only to the degree that we're talking about what the 7D2 brings to the table that is improved over previous generation cameras...

I simply had to establish the legitimacy of the baseline I was arguing for before raising the question of that baseline in the context of the 7D2.

I have to second Teamspeed's suggestion as regards testing out the lenses you're interested in using. The problem is that it may not be possible to do that properly without at least renting a 7D2, since that's the camera for which the question is being raised.

This is high praise from Romy.

IMHO, AF is the best I've used (> 1D4/5D3/7D). IQ/noise is better than the 7D, but to my eyes, the 1D4's and 5D3's noise is still less at the pixel level.

My 7D has noticeable noise at blue skies or OOF BG even at ISOs as low as 320, albeit this was easy to clean. The 7D MII has much less noise at the same sensitivities, and at higher ISOs, there is much less banding. Don't expect miracles though - at very high ISOs, the 5D3 still looks better at the pixel level.

Just uploaded to my webpage a bunch of burst shots at BIFs. If one wishes to see more detail, just click on the larger 1500x1000 versions. :)

Thank you very much! It is very nice of you to take the time to do this so that amateurs like me can get the benefit of professional opinions in this open and sharing a manner.

The sunbird shot at 1600 ISO was excellent and very clean - I definitely get more noise on my 7D at 1600 ISO than that shot.

If I don't get the shots I want with the gear I have, the only optics I need to examine is the mirror on the bathroom wall. The root cause will be there.

It looks promising but it looks like we may be waiting until December to really see what people are saying once people here get this camera in their hands. I would have liked to see 100% crops but there is a sample here From Art Morris.

He says he will be shooting higher ISO and report back. I am anxiously waiting to hear what he has to say.

You have only 3 weeks to wait at this point. :)

I first started at DPR many years ago. Romy inspired when it came to birding. I figured if he could do it I could. Of course I'm not in same league but his work pushed me to get better. Also his moon shots. I could not afford a $10,000 lens so based on his work I picked up a Canon 2X and Sigma 2X and stacked them on my 300 for my bucket list moon shot.

I was going to skip the MK2 but based on what I'm seeing may just go for the 24 -70 F4 IS package being offered in Canada and sell it including my 7D. I like that back well. The Q button, etc is laid out like my 5D3.

Around here we get a little fella called the "least tern" they are fast like a swallow, and erratic, and as the name implies, tiny. Very hard to get a shot of. I am imagining your whiskered tern is similar, and am impressed with your shots tracking it!

 "erratic" is being too kind descriptively. I think the most amount of time I've seen a least tern fly in a straight line is about 6 inches!

Lotsa stuff, running outta room and a wife...I keep looking at her and wondering???
