Here's the definitive answer to a frequently posted question in this forum on the lack of extremely fast and wide range zoom DSLR lenses.
It's a useful journey into reality by Lens Rentals' Roger Cicala on why you can't go out and buy one.![]()
By the way, Canon already makes their own wide-range EF-mount video lens with similar dimensions and weight to the Fujinon covered by Cicala. The T2.95-3.7 L Canon
is a completely manual lens that is priced at US $43,000, probably requires two or three people to operate, and has a limited image circle.
The thing is, with still images sharpness and resolution are king, whereas with with cinema light transmission, focus breathing, distortion, contrast, etc matter in ways that don't even effect a stills only shooter. If you are shooting a scene with four different lenses, those lenses had better render the same exposure at the same settings (t-stops). When the cameraman marks the focus stops for the scene the focus movement had better be exactly the same through each pull. Things like that don't really matter for stills, but can make or break a cinema lens.
