My 7D is broken and won't communicate with ANY of my Canon LP-E6 batteries. Does anyone know how much it might cost to repair it? If it's too much, I'd rather wait for the new 7D Mark II.

Send it in to canon, at worst you would only be out the shipping cost for a diagnostic and quote. Then you csn decide based on real information.

Get a grip and put the batteries into that. The grip uses a different power pathway, and this might allow you to get the camera back up and running.

Thanks TeamSpeed, I tried all kind of fix it ideas except for the crazy one of putting the camera in the freezer.... I have the same problem as bettyn. BTW, Canon quoted me a minimum of $350 to fix my 7D. So the grip idea looks like a nice work around!

If you want to go the Grip way I'd say check the local camera club and see if anyone has one you can try - otherwise get one from a local shop so that you can try before you buy. No point getting a grip if its not going to fix the problem; cause then you've still got the repair bill ontop of the grip purchase. Note that also the grip in itself won't be transferable from 7D to 7DMII (least ways that's always been the case before).

Remember also that the new 7DMII is going to cost WAY more than a new 7D or a second hand one - let alone a repair cost (Canon shouldn't repair anything at extreme cost without contacting you first).

Tools of the trade: Canon 400D, Canon 7D, Canon 70-200mm f2.8 IS L M2, Sigma 120-300mm f2.8 OS, Canon MPE 65mm f2.8 macro, Sigma 150mm f2.8 macro, Tamron 24-70mm f2.4, Sigma 70mm f2.8 macro, Sigma 8-16mm f4.5-5.6, Raynox DCR 250, loads of teleconverters and a flashy thingy too

Good advice Overread thanks, noticed that the grip price on BH dropped about $50 so it most likely won't be transferable. I would like to get the MII someday once all the reviews are out and have the 7Dc be my backup or second camera with a different lens.

If someone offered you a 7D for $350 would you buy it?

A decent 7D is definitely worth $350.

BTW, you recommended me getting a 17-55 lens a few years back for the 7D. What a great pairing that turned out to be thanks!

If you would buy on for $350, why not have yours repaired? Its the same transaction.

Give these people a chance for an alternative repair cost...http://www.advancecamera.com/ (external link). If you do use Canon, ask about the "mode dial lock" modification. It might be useful to you and perhaps can be included in the price.

On the site a person with a similar isuue of battery communication on a 7D got it repaired for around $250. Quoting from the content (see 7D battery communication error in right sidebar) it reads "the cost to disassemble the camera completely, clean, adjust and reprogram the camera runs $249 in labor, which includes a 1-year warranty."

I would sell it and upgrade personally. I am sure I could sell it for the price of the repair and shipping, then apply that to my upgrade, but that is me. :)

Assuming the grip trick doesn't work, and I cannot find any cheaper way to repair, of course...

As I had previously stated,

On the site (http://www.advancecamera.com (external link)) a person with a similar issue of battery communication on a 7D got it repaired for around $250. Quoting from the content at http://www.advancecamera.com …icate-with-battery-error/ (external link) it reads "the cost to disassemble the camera completely, clean, adjust and reprogram the camera runs $249 in labor, which includes a 1-year warranty."

I would think that putting $250 into a 7D for a CLA with a 1-year warranty is a worthwhile investment!

It would be a 1 year warranty on just that one issue. If some other issue arises, like a sensor issue, that would not be covered. Yes $250 is better than $350, but if I were going to upgrade anyways, it would be a very difficult decision to repair it. I would just sell it and put the repair bill estimate as an allowance toward the purchase.

"For sale, a 7D that needs its battery main board replaced, $300 (repair estimated at $250, unless you are handy yourself)".

There are many shops that buy up this type of equipment just to fix and resell them. Or they would buy the camera for all the parts, making easily 3x the cost in revenue.

It would be a 1 year warranty on just that one issue.

That would have to be something to be clarified by the OP. The actual statement from their warranty reads

We guarantee the service on all our repairs for 1-year, just like a new camera.

It's the part "just like a new camera" that comes into play. Does that imply the same warranty conditions as a new 7D had? Some people would say yes, especially on a full teardown and CLA. They have done work for me so I can attest to the workmanship but knock wood never had to return a camera.

Further, on the "About Us" link it states

There warranty is just like a manufactures warranty on a new camera, assuming sand, water, or impact are not involved, they stand behind our work.

But again, always best to ask up front and iron out expectations.

I just went through the same dilemma. I dropped my 7D off at Canon Canada and it cost me $250 for the diagnosis up front. 10 days later they called to say it was fixed and there would be no additional charge. They replaced the board that runs the top lcd display as well as the cover that goes around it. No rhyme or reason to why the camera broke, but at least it was repairable.
