The off brands you find on amazon are decently constructed. The only significant difference is thar many of them do not have the velevt flocking inside. Whether that makes any diffrrence in flare reduction is unproven.

Fotodiox is one brand I've been pleased with.

I'd try a 3rd party one unless you really want the Canon name on it. I just looked at the place I normally buy gear and they want $68.33 for a replacement Canon lens hood.

I've used aftermarkets too and had no complaints. The ones I've had do have the flocking inside as well.

I think paying 70 bucks for a plastic lens hood because it says Canon on it is foolish. Especially considering you can probably get an aftermarket for half that.

ET-86 is for version I and ET-87 is for version II.

Your hood is probably not fitting well because it is old and worn out. The little "nibs" that engage the lens do wear out with use.

Rainbowimaging on Amazon sells some very high quality accessories for Canon. I have a couple of their lens hoods and they are very similar to the OEM unit, including flocking, for a lot less money.

you positive about this ! where taking about the vary 1st version of this lens with no IS, this lens hood ET-86 seems like the inside is made for a over all bigger lens, and i see canon is recommending the ET-83-2,any way i hope it works out because i ordered it,it sucks to shell out this kind of money just for plastic but that's what make's us canon fans:rolleyes:

Sorry for the confusion......

ET-86 is for the 70-200mm 2.8 IS version I and ET-87 is for the 70-200mm 2.8 IS version II.

ET-83 is for the 70-200mm 2.8 non - IS. ( there really is no version I or version II of this lens)
