Hi team,

So i shoot a lot at a local drifting track (it's an old runway) and after submitting my photos online, people say they love them but the general feedback i've had from other photographers is that my photos aren't worth paying for and that they lack depth and style. I try to keep things as natural as possible but is there a way i can give my shots more drama and punch?

Perfectly accurate drifting images are boring. You should seek exaggerated intensity using excessive motion blur and tire smoke.

Thanks, I'll definately try for some more extreme angles, I really need to work on my panning i think.

My wife and I shot at a local race track over the weekend. There was a professional photographer posting photographs for sale as each race ended. While most of the shots were in focus, the description you mention is how I saw these images. His main concern was getting the shot, so there wasn't much more than cars "sitting" on the track. Ok, the tires may not have been at a stand still, but the motion was not very apparent. This meant busy backgrounds and an overall boring shot.

Testing out our new 7D2's, I shot over 10,000 pictures in 3 days. My wife wasn't out there as long, so she only has a couple thousand. Eliminated all the bad ones over the last couple days and I still have over 1,000 that I will need to further sort through to pick the best of the best. I don't have that much experience (I am a professional as I have been paid for my work) but I can tell you, pay attention to what is behind the subject you are shooting. For instance there was a porta potty, a parked truck, and even some branchless tree stems to name a few things that would ruin a shot. I look for a nice consistent / unobstructed smooth background and vary my shutter between 1/30 & 1/60. My shots are 10X better than the photographer from the track, who was shooting with multiple lens combo (including a 500mm), was 20 feet in front of the fence I had to stand behind, and he even had a ladder if needed to get higher.

Practice your panning, slow the shutter down, and pay attention the backdrop when shooting. Your tack sharp images will be a hit!
