Decent sound on the cheap? Yes it's possible.

One of my pet peeves with DSLR audio is that a shotgun seems to be the default recommendation when someone asks, "What mic should I get?"

The answer really is, "It depends on what you are trying to do."

Unfortunately the most effective sound is the most labor intensive to record.

In previous generations, sound film crews consisted of at least two people, one to operate the camera and a second to hold a microphone and ensure it was within an optimal distance of the sound source.

A "shotgun" extreme unidirectional microphone can be the most useful for a one-man band.

However, there are sound recording techniques that can be useful to learn.

Great points, but that's assuming you are producing a film to begin with.

I think it's worth defining what you are doing, then figure out how to go about it.
