One of my pet peeves with DSLR audio is that a shotgun seems to be the default recommendation when someone asks, "What mic should I get?"

In previous generations, sound film crews consisted of at least two people, one to operate the camera and a second to hold a microphone and ensure it was within an optimal distance of the sound source. A "shotgun" extreme unidirectional microphone can be the most useful for a one-man band. However, there are sound recording techniques Great points, but that's assuming you are producing a film to begin with. Joel
