I'm interested in attempting night sky photos, but really can't go out and buy a $600+ lens. Would this possibly be a decent introductory lens, useful for night skies as well as landscapes, at a reasonable price ?

I have a T3i, so I know I can't compete with a lot of what is posted here, but I'd like the best chance for success with what I've got and can afford ;)

The cheapest option is start with what you have. Although the 18-55 isn't f/2.8, it does work quite well wide open, whereas the the 24mm might need stopping down to get good sharp stars.
If you don't have one, your money would be better spent on a decent tripod for both stars and landscapes.

Steve.
