With all due respect, I think post-processing is secondary to waiting to get the shot until he's awake and/or in a better mood. He looks positively grumpy, like he had an all-nighter and somebody woke him up too early.

I think there's too much headroom at the top & the frame is a bit tight on the sides.

He looks like a typical grumpy teenager! Not blow up hang on your wall portrait worthy but definitely a great capture!
I would leave it alone, put it in the album for generations to come!

And paste it on the inside of his bedroom door as a "Heads Up!" ; )

Rao to answer your question, here are a few things I would do if you were to decide to process the shot you took above.
1. Use a brush from pretty much any of the photo editing software packages to remove the blemishes from his chin and forehead.
2. Use another brush to lighten the dark patches under his eyes.
3. You could have used a little catch light in the photo to bring more life to his eyes, but since that was not done in the photo itself, you can use another brush to enhance his dark iris' to make them more than just black holes.
4. Maybe whiten up the whites of his eyes, especially his right eye which is pretty blood shot on the outer side.

While it will not make this shot a prize winner at the county fair, it will at least make the image better than the one you posted.

You might also want to consider turning on Image Editing in your profile so people can use your image to show you what they are referencing.
Either way, keep practicing and this would be a good one to practice on to see if you can make a rather sour image into at least a good image.

That aside, I don't think skin smoothing is needed for a teenage lad. Looks odd. A shave wouldn't go amiss, though! You can always tone down razor burn later ...

not sure if everyone remember or read an article regarding a reddit.com member posting a photo of his/her baby asking help to remove a medical tube because it was the only photo they had before the baby passed away, but the point i want to say is i hope we can be sensitive with our comments. i don't know if this a similar situation or not but what if...??

sorry for my ranting.
