That is NOT RIGHT, it is 5120 X 2880 and that make the 5K, just like a 1980 X1080

but 5120x2880 makes 14,745K. I'm so confused!!

Surprised it is a pretty much a standard one....

Well it's not a pretty much standard one, it's one meant for laptops it is the m290x gpu. here is an interesting analysis http://www.extremetech.com …-5k-out-of-a-last-gen-gpu (external link)

It's not designed to push 3D graphics and games at 5K, that is for sure. Should be more than adequate for video and photo editing along with typical desktop work.

It upscales just fine. I watch blu-rays on my Mac and 1080p looks fantastic.

…and the resolution of the screen on your Mac is 5120 X 2880? Or 2560x1440. We're talking HUGE here, bro, not Big :)

Too bad Mac does not have the proper color space or gamma on any of their displays. Are there specs for the CIE coordinates for the color primaries for this display?

BTW Resolution is not pixels and pixels are not resolution.

I've found the "native resolution" claims on retina screens can be hit or miss when it comes to picture quality. By default, the Mac OS sets the desktop resolution lower (more like regular 2K HD) for text legibility. Only apps that can switch to 4K/5K for full screen video can take advantage of the extra resolution. It does seem that screen resolution is a buzz word with tv/monitor manufacturers. Even though there's still not a fully standardized 4K video source standard, here comes a 5K monitor! It may or may not have better IQ: just depends on the upscaling, viewing distance, screen size, etc. There also becomes a point of diminishing return based on screen size. I've been reading reviews on new smartphones (thinking of upgrading mine soon). The 5.5" LG G3 has a native 4K resolution: but most reviews say that it's not too noticeable a difference on a smartphone size screen.

I personally am enthusiastic about 4K video, and will like to see it for home cinema...where there can be a visual difference if you're watching a large screen close up.

Hmmmmm. I think a low specced Mac pro with NECs 99.8% aRGB 4k monitor is still more lucrative than the 5k iMac maxed out. The gpu does make me wonder, since it's not upgradeable. It might run okay now but what if future photoshop/LR or applicable plug ins start leaning on the gpu more.... I've enjoyed my 2010 iMac 27" despite that models issues; but as I look at replacing it in the next 12-24 months, I think that the Mac pro line will offer better longevity, as I can upgrade components more gradually over time.

That was true in Ansel Adams's time, but not today. Today, a display or a camera with more pixels has more resolution (whether you like it or not:D there are now two separate definitions of the word: - 1) how many distinct details can be perceived and 2) how small are the details that can be perceived)

It will be like watching my old 480i camcorder movies on my current 1080p screen!

Bit of a disparity in the price of the two products. I recently updated my MacBook and was considering updating my imac to a pro then this came along pretty good bang for buck all in one machine.
