So yes, it's a good deal if you resign yourself to shooting a lot of flash, and plan to hack the OEM firmware.

Uploading custom firmware was very easy and painless.

Shooting lot of flash... Hate to say it but the improvement vs modern crop sensors, while noticeable, is not night and day. At ISO3200 you will still get noise from T5i just as from XTi, the lighting conditions matter more than sensor improvements...
