1/1600 at f4.5 ISO 800 - should be enough to stop motion, right? There is a weird motion blur that is noticeable on the names on the back of the jersey and on the entire length of the arm of the boy looking straight at the camera.

I am sure this must be user error. What am I doing wrong to miss this shot?

Perhaps you are using a UV filter to "protect the lens" in which case you are picking up reflections.

I am using a UV filter although it was very cloudy/drizzly today. I'll shoot without it tomorrow just to check. Thanks for the tip.

Can't really say anything at this small size. Can you post larger? I hesitate to blame the UV filter, unless you're using a really cheap one. Below is 1/1600, with B+W MRC UV, and nothing that looks like a reflection to me.

My suspicion is that your picture is actually backfocused- it looks like the net is a lot sharper than the jerseys in front of it. Without knowing more of your settings / seeing the picture larger, it's hard to say, though.

I agree, it looks like your focus was on the net in the image. Post a larger version and additional settings info and we might be able to assist.

Judging by the small image, I would say that the player with the name on his jersey is slightly "out of focus" than the kid in yellow, which appears to be the main subject as well as what is "in focus". It seems that the distance between the two is approximately 10-12 feet. This slight "out of focus" on text can sometimes appear to give a ghosting effect rather than an "out of focus" effect.....
But then again, the image as a whole doesn't seem to appear very sharp. We would really need to see a much larger version. However, even shooting at 1/1600 sec., camera shake can still happen due to the lens length and your true ability to steadily hold a camera. Also, a lot of "kit lenses" as well as some earlier made off-brand lenses tend not to be very sharp due to the simple and inferior made glass and this too could be the culprit.....
How much cropping into the picture could be another, heavy cropping or cropping into an image very closely to give it a close-up appearance can also cause this phenomena.....

Are you shooting with the IS on? At that shutter speed is will be useless. I don't have IS on my lens so I can't say from experience, and wonder if the IS could cause this. Just a thought....

Guessing you were shooting the 85mm wide open and you are probably seeing purple fringing or chromatic aberration, very common with that lens. Basically you get a little greenish or purplish tint along margins of bright and dark boundaries, i.e. the kid's sleeve and the names on jerseys.

edit:

so to get rid of it, you are going to have to stop down, go to f/3.5 or something increasing your DOF and decreasing the appearance of CA. If you "need" to shoot wide open, i.e. on such a cloudy day and maxed out on your iso range, then its on to getting more suited lenses.

2nd.

try flickr. Or export a JPG that's 1024 px wide, and use a low enough quality setting to keep it under 150kb (low quality on the jpg should still be easy enough to see what's going on.)
