7D2 GPS EXIF data

My understanding is that the 7D2 records the GPS co-ordinates as well as the compass orientation of the camera. Has anyone seen how this info is reported? Does LR5 handle this data? As the camera gets closer to being shipped I'm looking into more details.

I doubt this will be known for certain. I do believe that the GPS data will be in the EXIF if you want it to be.

Will LR5 handle it? Maybe after it can recognize the .CR2 file.

It will most likely work just like the 6D does. Lightroom, Flickr, 500px, etc will all recognize the gps exif data.

Nope, it doesn't.

I haven't tried in Lightroom etc., but Canon's own software does of course understand also the direction data. It works with the only camera I have that records direction as well.

Canon Japan has posted sample images at http://web.canon.jp …ng/eosd/samples​/eos7dmk2/. I downloaded one and the EXIF information seems intact, at least as seen by DPP 3.14.15.0. I have attached the EXIF and I see typical GPS coordinates of latitute, longitude, and altitude but I do not see anything related to direction, but again that could be unique to the version of DPP I used.

Does GPS drain the battery? Can it be turned off?

I looked at some of the Canon sample images and all the Chrome EXIF plugins just showed the offset to the GPS data and not the actual info.

I guess it will take a while before the EXIF programs catch up with the new fields.

Are you certain a compass heading or camera orientation will be acquired by the 7DII? That would require additional hardware above and beyond the GPS circuitry and its associated algorithms. The GPS cannot display a heading unless there is motion and the the heading is determined by looking at succesive points as defined by latitude and longitude. The non-automotive GPS units today, like those used by hikers, have a built in electronic magnetometer to provide a heading. Stand in one spot and turn your body full circle and it is the magnetometer that tracks your orientation, not the GPS hardware.

Just like the separate GP-E1 and GP-E2 units, the 7D Mark II has a built-in three axis magnetic orientation sensor. So yes, we are certain that it does record the direction the camera is aimed as well as the position where the camera is located.

You can look in the user's guide for the 7D Mark II and see the instructions for calibrating the magnetic sensor yourself, if you like.

And the particular magnetic compass information is on page 206.

Thank you for the link to this voluminous manual. Both the GPS and the magnetic compass can be turned off. In fact, the default setting is disable. Not sure I will ever use them. Just one more week to wait!
