Nick,

I don't engineer lenses for a living, so can only go on what I see. Other things that seem to increase the likelihood that the purple finging shows up is the light source, cycling of the lights and as you mentioned, the really high contrast areas like black piping on white basketball uniforms. Here are two examples of the same uniforms with and without the purple fringing.

Shot with a bit of purple fringing - and for some reason, I don't have big issues with my copy, but you can see the spots on the black piping at stomach/hip areas where the light isn't consistent that it shows up.

[IMG]'s

After rethinking my own shots and shooting conditions, its probably more about the evenness and consistency of lighting that causes the CA more than the exposure. I probably misspoke.

dave

Its about the way the lens is designed, nothing do to with exposure.

Btw your right, the harsh changes in light are where it shows.

If your into your physics;

Grabbed this one last night. Focus was placed on the number on the side of the first car. (1/25s, f/3.5, ISO 800, flash fired)

For those of you who have the 85/1.8 AND the 135/F2L, which one do you find yourself reaching for the most?

I'm glad I had the hood on mine, bumped into a door the other day pretty hard and just scuffed the hood instead of damaging the glass -- not that the lens is crazy expensive, but it's nice insurance

Worth a try I suppose? Maybe I need to get in close, seemed to work on my last portrait shot of my sister... Even at 1.8 I had some sharp shots! Anyway the store owner already let me know that I had to come back when he got a bunch of new ones for comparison!

I've got a 50D as well, and although I thought my 85mm was sharp at some points, other times I was surprised at how OOF some of my shots were. I finally micro adjusted to about +3 or so, and it's made a world of difference. Hope this helps!
