I'm looking at using it for portraits. Indoors, the 85mm 1.8 can be tight on a crop. It's difficult to fit in a group of people. It's fine for 1 or 2 (head to shoulder) people in your shot. The low light capability is a plus to keep in mind, however. I wouldn't recommend it for big group shot indoors (not a party lens per se). If you have the room in setting up the shot (outdoors for instance or a roomy indoor studio), I think an 85mm for portrait is fine. | Canon EOS Systems |

For example, in indoor situation, 85 is kinda long for me, but, I don't mind stepping back a few steps to shoot. In outdoor situation, 85 is perfect for me. I bought the 85 mostly for outdoor shots.
