The CA/PF is driving me crazy on my lens. Other than that, it is spectacular!! Wide open, slightest hint of contrast and bamm, purple fringing. Examples coming up.

Not sure what the issue is. Here are 2 shots, wide open. The first one I printed at 16 x 20.

You have to REALLY blow out a contrast border (or shoot shiny metal, barcodes) to get anoying PF.

Samples, please.

Bohdan - I may be, and probably am, completely wrong.

Bohdank: Although the images themselves are good, I do see hints in them too.

Image 1: Around the strands of her hairband/wrap.

Image 2: The water droplets on her left side at about torso height.

I just posted a thread with samples and crops: https://photography-on-the.net …/showthread.php?t=1101750

I am not an OCD pixel peeper when it comes to everyday shots, but I just want to get an opinion on what an accepted level of CA/PF on this lens is, while I still have the time to replace it.

Thanks!

Here are three examples. All are shots from the 85mm f1.8. All wide open. All uncorrected crops.. All exhibit serious CA/PF. It's a given with this lens sometimes. I have dozens of shots taken in sunshine that do not exhibit CA/PF. It depends on your light, your settings, and the image contrast edges. I've seen many other examples from other photographers who also find this lens to exhibit CA. You just have to be aware of it and learn to deal with it in PP. Not that big of a deal unless you need to process a couple hundred shots and they all have CA in them.

This woman's dress in black on white. There is no purple in the dress, yet if you zoom in you'd swear it was purple stripes on a white background.

That demonstrates my problem beautifully.

I do know what you mean though. Not all the photos from the same set have it. There's a good number of photos that won't shot it for similar settings and conditions which leads me to believe it's a very specific condition in which this CA/PF shows up.

Don't shoot wide open unless you really have to. If you have image processing software like Photoshop or DxO or Lightroom, you can deal with it pretty well there. If I can't get it all out using the CA sliders, I duplicate the image layer and desaturate the bottom layer. Then I throw a mask on the upper layer and just paint out the CA. The gray fringing is almost impossible to see. Certainly far less visible than the purple fringing.

I guess that answers my question. I was wondering if replacing the lens will fix it, but this seems like a design flaw/characteristic of the lens.

Thanks for the help. I don't recall at what f-stop, but it did clean up stopped down.
