Kjonnn,
Is the focusing ring on your lens tight or does it have a very small amount of play front to back? My 15-85 on the focusing ring has no play whatsoever, the 35mm f/2 on the other hand has the same amount of play.

Boingy, thank you for the quick reply.

Kind regards,
Dimitri

Its seems perfect to me. No play in it at all.

It could be just me but for whatever reason my 85 just doesn't feel that "crisp" on my 5D. It's pretty decent on the 7D, more in line with what I'd expect, but it takes a good deal of processing to get files I'm really happy with from my 5DmkII.

Ironically it's also totally fine on my 1V with film, but that's a separate matter.

It's a good and useful lens, but I think I still prefer my 135L :D

I'm struggling with this saw well. To make it worse, my friend wants my 85mm. Decisions. I rarely use this lens. Good lens, the 135 is just ridiculous.

For those who have the 85mm 1.8 and use it on a crop camera. Do you all prefer the 85mm focal length over 50mm for outdoor portraits.

^^ I have the 85mm 1.8 + 50mm 1.8 ii, I usually go for the 85 since I think the bokeh is nicer, the autofocus is better, and it's a pretty nice focal length for outdoors.

kjonnn,
Many thanks. I have to say, I am little peeved, the image quality is very nice on this lens and the sharpness is excellent. The lenses focuses perfectly (well, at least in some basic tests I did). So now this focusing ring movement is nagging me but not too much. I think I may as well just keep the lens.

Thanks much to everyone.

Kind regards,
Dimitri

Nice shot Juggy , i like the idea .

Yesterday i decided to take only one prime lens (85mm f/1.8) and shoot geometrical and architectural shapes only , got some decent shots . that's one of them , more to come .

i dont use it for portraits but night outdoor deck hockey... and like the 85mm x 1.6.... my 50mm 1. doesnt have enough reach and 2 doesnt focus as fast in low light vs my 85mm..

now this is just me... and not portraits.. ;)

indoor i love my 50mm... or 24-105L if using flash

I sold my 50mm f/1.4 for my 85mm f/1.8, I prefer it in every way. Worst case scenario, I have to take a few more steps back outside to get the framing I want :p
