Maybe the Sigma then?

You know, while I have enjoyed my sigma's (and continue to do so) and the 85 looks beautiful, it is still a bit pricey and I really feel the canon 85 1.8 is a real bang for the buck. Just posted in the WTB forum!

aaaaand I don't think so :D, that is one truley amazing peice of glass that I am lucky to have in my bag (even though I only occasionally do it justice)

Not on this income! The 1.8 is a steal for 300ish bucks. The next big money I'm spending is for the 35L :D :D.

That's it, I'm putting up a WTB add, so if anyone can help me out let me know. Hope to see ya soon with some pics.

35L is on the list. I plugin my 28mm to my Mark III, darn it's too wide and distorted.

I even read some reviewers favoring this lens instead of 85L.

Dankata, your technique is ridiculous lol...It doesn't matter what lens you have mounted, it still comes out amazing. Great work!

Yeah, as much as i want to own an 85Lii, i can't imagine dropping the funds for one.. at least not at this point. Especially how well the 85 1.8 performs, it's a bargain. I'm just itching to upgrade to either the sigma 85 1.4 but worried about the siggy lotto again.

CPS is sending me an 85L to test out so i'll see how it pairs with the 85 1.8.

I agree. I have owned all 3. The canon is sweet but I still can't decide as my sigma was quite good. Both are equally as sharp IMHO. I think the question is do you need 1.2 or snappy focus? The 85L focuses slow but is amazing! Dunno both are great.

At wide apertures both the L and siggy are so sharp... You guys all have some great stuff here with the 1.8 though

The 35L (or any 35mm on full frame) is quite a joy to use, I will say that it is a great focal length to work with if you want something slightly wider than a standard 50mm.

That being said, 28mm definitely has its place, but you have to need what it offers. A 28mm will give less distortion than say a 24mm, but it is still wide enough to include a good portion of the scene or environment.

Just keep in mind that the wider your lens, the closer you should be to your subject ;)

The 85L is worth the cost if you need to shoot at f/1.2 for selective DOF purposes. It seriously one of the finest lenses Canon makes today. That being said I highly doubt I ever see myself buying one. (Renting sure, for specific shoots). The 1.8 version focuses SO much faster it's not even funny. It's also a fraction of the size / weight / cost of the 85L so it is much easier to run around with.

The trio of the 35L / 85 1.8 / 135L will deliver outstanding image quality and pack into a nice small bag. With the money you saved from not purchasing the 85L you could purchase a second camera body easily.

So, to sum it up, if you need f/1.2-1.4 for a specific reason then you will absolutely not be even the slightest bit disappointed by the 85LII, but if you are ok with 1.8 as a max aperture (like me) you will also be perfectly happy with the 85 1.8

i have owned both lenses, only reason i got the 85L II because i got it for dirt cheap, and of course its IQ, JUST AMAZING, but the 1.8 version is no slouch it does deliver some stunning results and its much lighter and comfortable to shoot with...unless if you shoot wide open all the times, there is no need to buy it.

Thanks for this post. Got a line on a 85 1.8 and am heading inthe direction of the prime trio you describe! It might be a little while on the 35L though.

I've toyed over selling mine before.... I much prefer 50mm to 85mm & the 50mm gets much much more use. I then bought a cheap Sigma 70-200/2.8 a few weeks back for the occasional motorsport/track days so need to release funds.... :( :(

I've purposely used the 85/1.8 at a local car meet today so I am now selling off surplus car parts instead of the 85mm
