for portrait work i think the 70-200 is too heavy. 85mm is just perfect.

I agree, I normally use the 70-200 for situations that I really need it. I normally have a the 35 L glued to 1 5d mark II and the 85 USM to the other.

Thanks guys! Maybe (hopefully) you'll see me in here sometime :)

You won't regret that purchase! It's a super fast and accurate lens that has an awesomely fast aperture. It does have some C/A issues, but nothing that Lightroom can't handle.

Enjoy your purchase, and welcome to the club!

Thanks, I just got it and I have an event to shoot tonight. I will have to try it out and post some pictures.

I am having trouble getting my photos in focus with this lens... still unsure if it's the lens or me :( I'll be doing some extensive testing this weekend, however.

How are the pictures coming out? Do you have any samples? Also with a big aperture, after acquiring the focus through AF are you moving or switching subjects without re-focusing?

I don't do focus and recompose because I'm awful at it. Here is one example and I'll post more once I get home from work if you'd like me to. It is usable but it is nowhere near as sharp as some of the photos I'm seeing here (focused on his eyes). Looks like the wall might be sharper than his face. I used the center point focus on my 60D (just cropped it in post). And this was the best one of about ten photos. The sharpness/focus was way off on the others that I just deleted them. They were test shots before a shoot, so I ended up using my Sigma 30 instead.

Just my guess here is that you acquired focus from one of the focus points (which was on his face), then took the picture. If that's the case then it does seem to be back focusing a bit. Do a few more tests like three batteries or other objects that are a few inches away, focus on one, and then take the picture, if it's focusing a little off to the front or the back, then you know you have to send in your lens, unless you can do micro adjustments on the 60D (that I'm not sure of).

No microadjustment, unfortunately. And yes, single point center focus on his left eye (our right). Bummer because I really see the potential in this lens. And I bought it used, so no warranty :(

Does anyone here know how much Canon charges to have the lens calibrated? I'll do some extensive testing over the weekend.

I would just call them, it shouldn't be a bit deal, maybe with shipping $100, maybe more.

How are you guys finding the CA wide open on this lens?

Owned a Sigma 85 1.4 and Canon 85 1.2L II. I think Canon's 85 1.8 is not any worst. I really love this lens.

My third and newest (age-wise) copy of this lens exhibits noticeably less CA than the other two copies did. That's not to say they were awful but this one is definitely better. That being said, LR4 has the ability to seemingly completely do away with CA all together and I am completely confident in it.

For the price you pay, the 85 1.8 is a screaming bargain.
